ml> i remember something about TipTop bring the mail across the pond but
ml> no one ever really spoke of the distribution from there... what i did
ml> read seemed to indicate that systems in each region would connect with
ml> TipTop to pull the mail and then feed it to those that connected with
 ml> them...

MvdV> Yes, that sort of sums it up. The pond crossing link was between
MvdV> randy Bush and Henk Wevers. There was a Fidnews article
MvdV> describing the details of this Fido over Internet connection.

i definitely recall reading that they had to have permission from both ends of
the network connection to use the service to transfer the fidonet traffic...
basically, they were tunneling the data via FTP...

MvdV> Henk wevers carried the AKA od 2:2:777 for this. From there on
MvdV> the mail was distributed to the regional TipTop gates that
MvdV> carried AKAs of 2:Region/777. As I mentioned before, I waas
MvdV> co-sysop of the R28 TipTop gate and for this purpose I onc
MvdV> carries an AKA of 2:28/777.5.

hehe, i like that! for one thing it points out what i have stated before about
points being able to distribute fidonet traffic to others not their boss
nodes... but there is a lot of mailer software that doesn't allow for secure
connections like this because they assume the boss node will be making all
connects and so the session (and packet?) passwords must be the same for the
boss and the point... this was a problem back in the heyday and i went round
and round with some developers back then about it... they had certain notions
that were not evidence but their software attempted to force them in place...

at one period in time, each of my BBS nodes had their own point number to make
it easy to see what node a user was writing from... twern't all that big a deal
but it sure tweaked a few noses of those who said that it wasn't supposed to be
done like that... none of them had an answer when asked what was the difference
between doing this and having a single user per point as some assumed...

ml> i don't know that i ever heard of any fully connected polygon
ml> setups over there at all... not even with TipTop being one of
 ml> those star systems...

MvdV> No, they didn't. It was a strict hierarchical distribution
 MvdV> system.

that was my understanding...

MvdV> I know that 2:28/777 at one time fed at least one one fully
MvdV> connected polygon in R28, but it was not part of that mesh
MvdV> itself. It had a single link with one of the members of that
 MvdV> mesh.

so no different than what i described earlier...

MvdV> In the mid nineties phone rates between The Netherlands and the
MvdV> US started to drop. They were dropping faster than the rates of
MvdV> calls between European countries and when it becames cheeper to
MvdV> call from Sweden to the USA than to call from Sweden to The
MvdV> Netherlands the Z2 TipTop distribution came to an end.

that's similar to what happened here... it was always cheaper to make an out of
state LD POTS call than it was to make an in-state one... the LATAs didn't
really play into the situation...
