==============
Greetings TIM!

RW>>> Reminiscing one day, I drove through the neighborhood where I first
RW>>> stayed in SD, back in the 60s; There used to be a rooming house at
RW>>> 6th and Laural. Imagine my surprise to find faggots running the
RW>>> streets and little else there. Nancy and I split the area, post
 RW>>> haste.

 TR>> Yeah...I drove for Yellow Cab in mid-to-late 1979 while I was
TR>> waiting to get my paperwork to go through so I could go back to
 TR>> interstate trucking.

TR>> What an area! All those sodomite bars along El Cajon Blvd or
TR>> University from about 30th on west to downtown.

RW>> Well, before that happened, there was a piano bar there that was run
RW>> by a couple who made a great entertainment team. He played piano
RW>> while his wife sang as she roamed the floor. It was like being in a
RW>> turn of the 20th century barroom; Mickey (her) and Finn's, don't
 RW>> recall his real name.

TR> I remember that place. My stepfather was in the Navy during WWII with
TR> a guy who tended bar there, and took me there the year I went to
 TR> Vietnam. `Mickey Finn's?'

Yeup.

TR> or something like that. It had a sort of 1900 atmosphere. I never
TR> saw the place again after that.

It moved to L.A. a little later. I remember the hoopala about that move in
the media. I'm not that sure about it, but that same place became the
'Female Impersonator' place I mentioned earlier.

TR>> I used to carry a briefcase for my trip sheet, money log and hack
TR>> license, as well as a Colt .45 auto. Even the cops carried a
TR>> hide-out pistol in that area. The place was crawling with street
TR>> people, petty criminals, hookers and sodomites all over the place.
TR>> It was like 42nd & Broadway in NYC!

RW>> One of the best entertainment places we've been to in that area was
RW>> a female-impersonators restaurant with a stage show. My innocent
RW>> 40yo cousin came in from the farm in Wisconsin and we treated her to
RW>> that place. She was so impressed with it, she didn't stop talking
RW>> about it for about a year after. Her mother used to come with my
RW>> parents to visit CA and she told me about it. I was just as
RW>> impressed that my cousin was impressed with the place.

TR> That place still goes, although it may have a different name now. Its
TR> a sort of a `drag' resturant/bar/floor show place in North Park. That
 TR> the place you mean?

Yeah, but it was on University about where Micky Finn's was.

TR> There were several `tranny' bars along El Cajon Blvd east of
TR> Fairmont, but most of them are gone now. All th ecard rooms are gone
TR> now, too. They went with the opening of the first few casinos in the
 TR> local reservations.

I never did have much use for the card rooms. I preferred the bars,
especially the one next door to where my GF at the time worked as head
hunter.

TR> They renovated the entire freeway complex in that area where I 15 and
TR> 94 East came together not long after Archie Moore died and they got
TR> his property from the family. The entire area has greatly changed.

As I recall, that area got the freeways covered and it was one big
community area.

TR> Many of the businesses and bars that used to be around the freeway on
TR> both El Cajon Blvd and University Ave are either gone or changed from
TR> the pawn shops, bars, massage parlors, etc etc, to Vietnamese or
TR> Korean food markets, resturants, used car lots, or apartment
 TR> buildings.

That's how SD progresses over time. A foreign faction moves into an area
and before you know it, it is transformed into something that reflects the
origins of the people who live there.

TR> The black and hispanic street gangs are still around, but have to
TR> compete with the oriental street gangs now. Its not as dangerous
TR> an area in the daytime as it was anymore. But at night its a lot
 TR> different.

I'd sometimes go to SE San Diego and visit with a 'car nut' like myself
who had a garage and sort of club house in the back yard (lots of beer
and brats, etc.). As always, just after dusk you could hear firearms being
shot and a rowdy noise that wasn't there before nightfall. Rather than
drive back home via SESD, I'd head east and exit thru Lemon Grove, then
north to Mira Mesa.

    Have a day!
