Even here (in Belgium) it is quite easy to obtain a gun and a license for it.
It's one of the things that my American friends have gotten wrong.
 
The thing here is that citizens here don't feel this obsessive need for
firepower.
 
We don't have 12.000 shooting deaths a year and we certainly don't need a
mantra like the NRA's "Guns don't kill people, people kill people".
 
If there is a shooting incident, it usually is something involving a
single-shot 22 rifle in a domestic drama (husband/father/wife/child) or a
shoot-out among the Albanian maffia who are controlling prostitution in the
harbor cities.
 
The last police shooting-incident was .... I can't even remember.
 
Of course, when you make a statement like that you know something will happen
that will require foot in mouth. So yesterday morning there was a home-jacking
of a rich industrialist and he shot one of the 3 invaders with a licensed
Magnum .357 (reported in the paper today). The previous shooting incident? I
have no clue, it's too long ago.
