RW>> This was back in 1993-94, when halogen bulbs were new to the

 MvdV> OK.

RW>> Today, one can buy a new LED strip that will replace all of those

MvdV> $33 for a LED strip seems pretty stiff to me.

When someone has an exclusive item for a vehicle that is fast becoming a
rare item on the roads these days, they can get what the traffic will bear
for items to update those cars. People who're into 1987-1992 IROC-Z
Camaros will jump at the chance to buy such an item. People who're into
old 1960s Mustangs pay exhorbitant prices for original and/or copies of
originals to update their cars. And those cars were a dime a dozen when
they were new. It was aimed at secretaries, students and old maids when it
first hit the market, but it soon became a very popular car when Ford
decided to drop a small V8 into it, making a a performance minded
collector's item too.

MvdV> Fifteen years ago I mounted a third brake light on my Volvo 345.
MvdV> The hearth of it was a 40 LED strip. IIRC I got it for less that
 MvdV> EUR 10,-

The strip of LEDs I used was under $3...

RW>> Here's a link to that, which looks like a copy of what I did...

 RW>> http://tinyurl.com/c9lz5pn

MvdV> Looks good, but I would not pay $33 for it...

That's you...I wouldn't pay that for one either.

RW>> I tried to replace the tail/brake light bulb in my 1956 Chevy. There
RW>> is a problem in doing that, because the turn signal blinker relay
RW>> doesn't see the load that it needs to blink the bulb.

MvdV> Yes, you'd have to replace the blinker unit by something
 MvdV> "lektronik". ;-)

Yeup...something I can live without...

RW>> No problem using the LED replacement bulb as a tail light or brake
 RW>> light though.

MvdV> There have been problems with retrofitting leds on relatively new
MvdV> cars because the on board computer saw the led replacement as a
MvdV> broken bulb. Similar problems have been encountered with led lights
 MvdV> on trailers.

I'll keep that in mind when I get around to re-doing the lights on my
trailer. Waiting on the body shop to replace both fenders that a fork lift
driver bent up while the trailer was being used to move shop equipment.

RW>> I think I've seen a headlight that was surrounded by white LEDs, not
RW>> sure which car that was on...

 MvdV> Like this: http://tinyurl.com/c9lz5pn

Ahhh, another link that FF12 won't show...it'll have to wait until I can
view it on my laptop...

MvdV> That's the city light/parking/running light on a BMW. They go on
MvdV> whenever the ignition is turned on. The headlight only come on
 MvdV> after starting the engine.

MvdV> The parking light can also be turned on - together with the rear
 MvdV> light when parked.

I'll take your word for it.

RW>> Speaking of headlights. I have a pair of what the seller called

q

RW>> 'Paris driving lights'...they have a small blue bulb in them that
RW>> one is supposedly to use when driving in Paris (France)...dunno if
 RW>> that's true or not.

 MvdV> It is not true.

Probably not.

MvdV> The general rue has always been that when driving in one's own car
MvdV> on a visit, one may drive it anywhere in Europe when it is road
MvdV> worthy in one's own country.

So they'd be legal to use on an American car in Europe...

MvdV> In the 50's and 60'd French cars had yellow headlights. That was
MvdV> mandated. But as a foreigner one could have the white headlights
MvdV> that were used in the rest of Europe.

Yes, I recall an imported Renault with yellow headlights in that era.

MvdV> Yellow headlights were dropped long ago. There are hardly any
MvdV> country specific demands for vehicles any more. The regulations are
MvdV> 99% the same all over the EU now.

With the exception of certain items in California, that's how it is here.

MvdV> The rare exceptions relate to the UK and Ireland where they drive
MvdV> on the wrong side of the road. When I go to the UK or Ireland I
MvdV> have to do something about the asymetric headlights. But I need not
MvdV> shift the rear fog light to the right.

The only criteria here for rear lights is that they be visible at a
certain distance to the rear. No such thing as a fog light that I'm aware
of.

MvdV> I have seen those blue lights. They are illegal, but enforcing it
MvdV> seems to have no priority.

It is illegal to drive without any lights after dusk here. And it is
recommended that one use headlights, since it is illegal to drive with
parking lights only. Thus, blue lights wouldn't be exceptable. We also
have what is termed as 'blue dot' tail lights, which are illegal to use,
but they don't enforce that either.

MvdV> No idea why they are called Paris Driving Lights. Maybe it is a
MvdV> reference to Paris Hilton? ;-)

Could be a reference to Paris, CA, Paris, TX, etc...
