The San Diego Clippers basketball team had already
left for Los Angeles.  The San Diego Chargers football
team (and Oakland Raiders football team) may soon be
leaving for Los Angeles, if given the approval by NFL
owners/commissioner.

If the San Diego Chargers football team relocates
to Los Angeles, what will the city of San Diego do
with the football stadium?  Will it be razed and
then made into a parking lot?  What did the city do
with the basketball arena when the Clippers left?

At least the Houston Astrodome was auctioned off
in small parts so that people could get some souvenirs.

When the New Orleans Saints first started playing
in New Orleans, the games were played in Tulane
Stadium, a college open-air stadium that could seat
over 100,000 people.  In 1970, the Louisiana state
legislature voted to pay for the building of a new
domed stadium, known as the Louisiana Superdome,
for a cost of $26 million USD.  This was to be
paid with Louisiana tax dollars.  The real cost
turned out to be far more than a mere $26 million,
at well over $130 million by the time the project
was completed.  Remember, this was back in the
1970s, in 1970s dollars.

The Louisiana Superdome was, and remains to this
very day, the finest sports stadium ever built in
the world.  I doubt such a fine stadium could be
built today, the cost being into the billions.

Had the Louisiana Superdome not been built, the
city of New Orleans would not have a skyline today.
Instead of highrise buildings lining the CBD, the
main drag would be nothing more than a street
resembling "Main Street" in Smalltown, USA.

Of course, the French Quarter would still be
there for the tourists (and locals) to enjoy.
But how much nicer it would have been to watch
"Pistol" Pete Maravich shoot the lights out
when playing for the New Orleans Jazz in front
of 26,000+ crazy and whacked out drunken Cajun
fans (beer was a quarter in the upper decks).

And who can ever forget Archie Who (quarterback
for the New Orleans Saints, Archie Manning) - the
most famous Who in Who Dat Nation?
