Ärende: A blast from the past.
==============================
Hello Björn,

BF> I sometimes need to go back to old articles to find something. In this
case
BF> my original recipe for gravlax and gravlaxsås.

Can't be any worse than haggis (banned in the USA).
But nothing can be better than boudin rouge (banned by the FDA).

BF> But I also found an interesting article (there were more, so I encourage
BF> everybody to read the issue) written by Philip Lozier that seems to be
BF> highly topical still today, since nothing has happened.

And yet America voted for Hope and Change in 2008 and 2012,
getting exactly what they voted for. Only not quite what they
had expected or had in mind.

BF> ..... welcome to the world according to Phil:

BF> It is about time that somewhere in FidoNet, manditory
BF> participation/acknowledgment has been put in place.

Mandatory participation/acknowledgment. Would that be
like mandatory voting? US President Barack Obama talked
about the benefits of having such a system. As did the
dictators of the former USSR ...

BF> It is far too long that *C's can just sit back, process a nodelist, and
BF> think they are providing any useful service to FidoNet at all, other than
BF> fueling their own egos of having a feather in their hat.

The integrity of the nodelist is nonexistent. At least in
zone 1, which is known to have had at least one fictional
character masquerading as a preacher in a part of the world
that women there think they are being complimented by drunk
Navy guys calling them chammorro.

BF> The silent participation of the past is one of the major reasons Fido
BF> has degressed as much as it has. If it is allowed to continue, then
BF> the nodelist will continue to be innacurate, dead weight will clog
BF> things up to no end, and nothing will ever change.

The nodelist will continue to be inaccurate for as long as fidonet
sysops choose to retain is system of zones.

BF> Never mind the idea of after so many years it has come to the idea of
BF> having to force any RC's to get their heads out of the sand to get an
BF> accurate view of where FidoNet is at on this, I think it should be
 BF> taken further...

Ditch the zone system entirely. That is the only possible solution.
Or rather, the beginning of the solution.

BF> The IC should mandate that the ZC's locate all of
BF> their RC's, and find out who is dead, and who is not...

The zone 1 coordinator effectively assassinated the IC, along
with the possibility of resurrecting the IC. All that is left
now is four independent zones, with one of those zones being
virtually non-existent, and the other zone just a bit player.

[..]

BF> Everybody cries freedom... freedom is not free. Everybody cries
BF> "hobby"... well, hobbies aren't free either, so if contacting RC's
BF> below somebody, NC's below somebody, or nodes below somebody, costs a
BF> few bucks, then it is a "hobby related expense" that was basicly
BF> agreed to be sometimes necessary when the mere node hobbyist decided
BF> to stick a feather in their hat.

Let's have a fidonet with 10,000 zones. And 10,000 nodelists.
Wouldn't that be fun? Just think of all the expense the deposed
IC, and deposed zone coordinators, could save if that nifty idea
would be put into place ...

Each individual sysop would have his/her very own node and nodelist.
Not only that, but each sysop could call himself/herself King/Queen.
At least for a day. One hour each day ...

BF> Having to participate in administrative events (board meetings if you
BF> will) was also added when that feather got stuck in their hat... any
BF> *C not wanting to do what it takes, should just return to being an end
BF> node, and resign the responsibility that comes with their position.

Being King or Queen negates the necessity of having board meetings,
as all decisions would be made and carried out by executive order.
As the Red Queen in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland liked to say -
"Off with your head!"

BF> IMO, the first priority is cleaning all the dead listings out of the
BF> nodelist, and insuring that future node listings will be accurate...
BF> then we can move on with issues that relate to FidoNet as a whole, as
BF> we will have an accurate number as to consider a "majority" of nodes.

"It is not who votes that is important. It is who counts the votes."
- Joe Stalin, Georgian leader of the USSR

BF> Just my two cents worth on it.

Mandatory voting. Worked for Joe. Worked for Mao.
Worked for Fidel. And today Barack is shaking hands
with Fidel's brother, Raoul.
