Back then `windows' wasn't the default venue, only a `feature' you could
use or not as you chose, most BBS's ran ok.

When DOS was the default at boot-up, a batch file was easily written. I
remember back when I got my very first computer, a Commodore 64, in the
early 1980's.


Writing short programs was pretty easy. Even `machine' language got easy
once you caught on to it.


My first IBM based PC was in the early 1990's. A `286' with a green-screen
monitor? It booted up in DOS, and you had `tools' and another program I
have long forgotten the name of. A ten megabyte hard drive was super computing
in those days. And when the 40 meg Seagates came along you were really into
`computing' if you could afford one.


A 386 system with color monitor, Windows 3,1 and enhanced DOS that a friend
who had his own BBS and built systems for sale went for around $1600 for a
new system. Today I could buy 4 new systems based on Windows 8.1 for that
price!


I had three computers up till recently. Gave one away a few weeks ago to
someone who didn't have one. Its a Windows Vista system. Vista will be the
next version Microsoft will drop support for.


The one I'm using here is 8.1, and my laptop is Windows 7.


Computing has come a long ways since that old Commodore 64 I started out in
the world of `computing' with. Hard to believe thirty years have gone by since
my Commodore 64 days.
