Ärende: Little Rachel, little Rachel

Sometimes good and unsuspected things happen at a Boy Scout camp which have
nothing to do with scouting whatsoever.
 
I operate the camp phone of Boy Scout camp Melita Island in Montana, that phone
is answered 24/7 when camp is in operation.
 
So on July 7th 2015 the phone rang at 5.07am … unusually early … and the
following conversation ensued:
 
"Melita Island, good morning" .. <yawn>
 
"Yes, hello, I am the mam of a scout from the troop of Columbia Falls and I
just had a baby. .... .... .... Hello? .... Are you there?"
 
"Ehr ... congratulations ... everything alright with you and the baby?"
 
In the meantime I started looking around where the crew of 'Candid Camera' was
hiding. I always vowed nobody would ever catch me in the act of a camera joke
and I immediately grew suspicious.
 
Then I heard a baby cry, the way only a newborn cries, and I immediately
remembered the Up With People song "The wonder of it all"

Mam wanted me to get her son so he could meet his new little sister. So I said
"Now? At 5am? Who will pick him up?" ... and she probably understood there was
a logistical issue.
 
She would call me back.
 
That same morning around 8am during morning flags I called upon Michael to step
forward. He obviously was not ready for the news, but the whole camp cheered
him. In the afternoon, with proper adult supervision, we took him off the
island to go meet his little sister.
 
One day later, the 8th, he came back to the island and, look ... there was mam
with her 1-day old baby. I'm a sucker for babies and I went to see her ... she
made no sound, just lay blissfully happy in mam's arms enjoying her first day
of life.
 
Her name was Rachel and I wanted to say something to her.
 
'Hi Little Rachel. You will probably never know me, nor even care about me.
Just be aware some day that you brought some joy to the heart of a 64 year old
guy from Belgium on the very day that you were born. Maybe it will mean little
to you, but I will never forget July 7th.
 
And before I forget, I told your brother to beat the crap out of every other
kid that would ever annoy you ... that is what big brothers are for."
