Björn forgot the most important thing that happened during WWII
in regards to the European theater - FDR died.

Harry Truman was the US president when Hitler and his Nazis
fled Berlin, allowing Germany to begin its long road of recovery.
Europe was in ruins.  All of Europe.  Not just the western part.
Not just the eastern part.  All of Europe.  And most of the
fighting in Europe had taken place in the eastern part, hence
most of the destruction outside of Germany.

The United States had its Marshall Plan, which helped the
western part of Europe rebuild.  The USSR had its own version
of the Marshall Plan, which helped the eastern part of Europe
rebuild.  The city of Berlin was administered by the four
Allied powers - US, England, France, USSR.

Germany itself was partitioned into two separate states.
The first sentence in the West German constitution being
its main goal to re-unite the two Germanys as one.  The
chancellor of today's Germany is a woman from the eastern
part of Germany.  But Germans make no distinction as to
which Germans are from the west and which Germans are
from the east.

The US has formed many alliances.  But the only alliance
it really cares about is NATO.  And why was NATO created?
To contain Germany.  It was never the former USSR the US
was worried about.  It was always Germany, which had the
balls to start two world wars within a forty year period.

The former USSR had formed many alliances.  But the only
alliance it really cared about was the Warsaw Pact.  And
why was the Warsaw Pact created?  To contain Germany ...

Yes, the US and the USSR were Allies.  FDR and Stalin
were personal friends.  Not just heads of state.  But real
friends who cared for each other.

Winston Churchill was jealous, and smoked many a cigar
in those days.  And had far too many drinks ...
