In the South, it is a different world.  Or used to be.  Things
are changing today.  But oh so very slowly.  Still in all, change
is good.

It used to be, and still is among the elderly, that black folk
and white folk could work together professionally with no problem
whatsoever.  Did not matter whether one was rich or poor, black
or white.  People worked together in whatever their occupation
might be.  But socially it was a different world entirely.
White folk were expected to be with white folk, and black folk
were expected to be with black folk.  Any mixing was frowned
upon by the community.  And sometimes in most violent fashion.

I had an uncle who was white racist.  Ku Kluxer type of guy.
He did woodwork for a living.  Kind of like Jesus.  Or rather
Joseph.  Jesus was the son of a carpenter, not necessarily
a carpenter himself.  Anyway, you have to remember Ku Kluxers
were very religious.  Not just racist, but also religious.

My uncle used to live in the whitest part of town there was.
And then a few blacks moved into the neighborhood.  So what
did he do?  He bought some land in another all-white area and
built himself a new house.  And when a few blacks moved into
that neighborhood, he did the same thing again.

Anyway, he had a helper in his business.  And that helper
was a black man.  Don't ask me why he always had a black man
as his helper.  He just did.  And the quality of work he did
was excellent, as he had to earn a living like anybody else.

When my uncle was not working, he liked to pass his time
by doing "stuff".  That usually meant he and his friends
going around at night burning crosses on black folks' lawns,
and other "stuff" like that.  It was his idea of having fun.

As far as I know, he never hurt anybody.  Not physically.

This type of activity was rather common in the South until
the 1970s, when civil rights were finally extended to all -
except for Native Americans who had to wait until the 90s.

What I see today is a return to the old ways of the South.
Listen to the words of Donald Trump.  The guy is another Huey
Long.  Or Adolf Hitler.  He is telling the crowd exactly what
they want to hear.  And when he gets into office, he will do
exactly what he wants to do.

Donald Trump has called Mexicans lots of nasty names.
And his popularity shot up through the roof.  He continued
to call people nasty names, and his popularity continued to
rise, and has remained high.

What does that tell you who were are, as a society?  Are we
any better of a society today than were were before Rev. Martin
Luther King, Jr. told us his American dream?
