Many years ago in a fidonet that existed not in myth but in legend... you could
send internet e-mail via netmail... and vice versa.

Trust me, anyone with a fidonet address could do it.  My syntax was wrong but
this is what it looked like.  Don't try it now... it has quit working since
like year 2002.  But it was available to ANYONE who had access to fido net-mail
for many many years through almost all of the 1990's.

This was the only way a lot of people had access to internet e-mail back in the
day.  It worked well there were a few UU-Gates for the outbound... you would
send the e-mail to I think 1:1/4 (which was to the best of my reccollection
like this)

To: UUGATE @ 1:1/4
Subject: whatever the subject was

And in the first line of the body you put the internet address either with the
@.com address or the !bang addres in the format.

to: destination@ibm.com

I used it myself for a while until I ponyed up a lot of money (domains were not
cheap back then) to secure livewire.org (the bbs was a hobby I made no profit
from it so they would not let me have .com)

Ran for many many years until someone sniped it out from under me and they
still have it hence why I now have livewirebbs.com

There are gateways between FidoNet and the uucp network, and thereby the
Internet.  FidoNet is addressable from the Internet DNS universe via the DNS
zone fidonet.org.  A FidoNet node e.g. 1:105/42 has the domainized name
f42.n105.z1.fidonet.org.  Gating is done almost exclusively via the uucp
network.  The MX forwarders for the fidonet.org zone are set up such that
there is default forwarding for all FidoNet hosts should there be no gateway
which is local to the target host.

The correct RFC822 address for a FidoNet power user at point zo:ne/no.po
is user@Ppo.Fno.Nne.Zzo.FIDONET.ORG.  For example,

    randy.bush@p0.f42.n105.z1.fidonet.org

And, as points are optional in FidoNet, Jane User at the BBS user at node
zone:net/node is user@Fnode.Nnet.Zzone.FIDONET.ORG.  For example,

    lisa.gronke@f42.n105.z1.fidonet.org
