===================
Hello Allen,

LL>> The house was located not far from St. Louis Cemetery #1 -
LL>> the same cemetery where the scene from Easy Riders was shown.
LL>> The cemetery still exists, along with the statue Peter Fonda
LL>> was praying to (he was kinda high at the time). But the
 LL>> house is long gone.

 AP> Did Katrina take it?

No. It was gone long before then. But I would like to research
the history of the house. Would take some digging.

AP> My Aunt lived not far from Canal street and when the storm was coming in I
AP> drove down to get her. She had one surviving son in good health and we
AP> drove down there to get her I will never forget the clouds were ominous
and
AP> scary looking. That was my one and only time seeing New Orleans the way
it
AP> was... we left while you could still get out easily she packed what she
AP> could and left her home boarded up.

New Orleans survived the storm. It was a Cat 3 hurricane when it
made landfall, so winds were not as bad as what could have been.
But the storm surge was humongous. That is what caused the problem.
Not only were levees breached, but water seepage under the levees
also caused breakage. That is why 80% of the city was left in
ruins due to floodwaters. The French Quarter was spared, due to
its location and relative sea level. Remember, New Orleans is
nine feet below sea level, kind of like a bowl, surrounded by
swamp.

A lake to the north, the gulf to the east, the river to the south,
and the swamp to the west. Imagine a sunken island, with people
living there. That is New Orleans.

AP> We got back to Louisville and watched the horrors on TV and one month
later
AP> her son and I went back to check on the house because we couldn't reach
any
AP> of her neighbors. It was gone save for a few bricks that we picked up and
 AP> brought back to her.

Betsy was worse than Katrina. But the damage caused by the levees
having been breeched is what made the damage so widespread with
Katrina. Most of the houses and other structures survived the winds.
It was the waters that caused the real problems.

Camille was devastating, but hit Biloxi rather than New Orleans.
Camille was small, much smaller than Katrina. And also much more
powerful in terms of wind. Katrina was huge, a monster of a storm,
but the winds were survivable.

AP> She passed in 2012, and her son passed away in October. He was born
there,
AP> she married a gentleman there. I think it broke their hearts... the New
AP> Orleans we visited after that was not what I saw picking her up. I know
it
AP> has been rebuilt, I want to go back... but I will always have that
horrific
AP> memory of finding her beautiful old home GONE... I mean it was GONE. She
AP> wanted to stay said she's been through storms before. What neighbors that
 AP> were left told
AP> horror stories of having to swim through the ocean for their lives. I
know
AP> she would be gone too if we didn't get her. I'm thankful for that.

I have a cousin who decided to stay during the storm. Katrina hit,
and then the levees broke, and water started seeping into her home.
And the water kept rising. And rising. And rising. When it got
to chest-level, she decided it was time to go. So out the window
she went. But it was dark. And scary. Especially for someone
her age, barely out of her teens. What do you do in that situation?
No electricity. Car won't start. Can't drive anyplace due to the
water situation anyway. And you are alone. Very alone.

Put on some blackface and start walking. And hope you don't
get mugged along the way. She made it all the way to the Galleria,
a shopping center in New Orleans. The parking lot was filled with
people. All stranded, with no place to go.

She survived. So did many others. But not all were so lucky.

AP> Lee, if I ever pass your way would love to stop and hear you play.

I'm in the middle of the woods off The Blues Highway. Lots of
deer in these parts. Try playing a piano and in the middle of a
song hear a <BAM!> then continue playing your song ...
