Ärende: Crazy Floods in Louisiana
=================================
Hello Tim,

->> Flooding is a natural disaster, made worse by climate change.

TR> Flooding is a natural occurrence that has happened many times in the past
TR> prior to Man ever being here, and will occur again may times in the future
TR> long after Man has gone extinct!

Only if the planet itself survives.

TR> BTW....there were `reasons' why the natives here prior to explorers
arriving
TR> didn't live right up ON most coastal areas or in flood plains; They KNEW
 TR> better!

Most of them knew better. Those who did live in flood prone areas
were most likely fugitives or outcasts. Native American populations
in Louisiana lived along the Atchafalaya Basin, but not within.
They would travel within in order to hunt, or fish. But they knew
better than to locate their villages where the waters would wipe
them out.

->> What is unusual is the lack of hurricanes and tropical storms
->> hitting the Gulf Coast. We really are due for another Katrina.

 TR> Not `unusual' at all.

There are three storms out in the Atlantic headed this way. In
about a week, folks in Louisiana and the Gulf Coast may be forced
to start heading north.

->> Past due. Not just New Orleans, but other cities. Such as
 ->> Houston, Miami, Tampa ...

->>>> ... Opportunist: Someone finding himself in hot water, decides to
 TR> bathe.

 TR> bathe.

 TR>>> Especially Cajuns!

->> I live in the swamp. And like most other Cajuns, I have a pirogue.
->> And a paddle. I am perfectly at home living in the woods, or in the
->> swamp, and can survive quite well with only a knife in my pocket.

->> I have survived several hurricanes and tropical storms. This
->> was flooding on a massive scale, with not much wind being a factor.
->> The water just kept falling from the sky, and waters kept rising
->> from everywhere else, and just got worse and worse and worse.

TR> I once lived on the high desert in Arizona. Hot...dry...

There is beauty in the desert. If one knows where to look,
and what to look for. But I much prefer the swamp.

TR> You walk along and if you pay attention to where you're stepping (as you
TR> should) you will notice little shells and fossils that actually belong on
a
TR> sea bottom! Much of Arizona is several thousand feet above sea level, and
TR> hundreds of miles from any sea!

Geologists have studied the deserts of the southwest and noted
how widespread the sea was way back eons ago. But was it really
eons? Native Americans built structures on the *top* of mesas,
apparently traveling from one mesa to another by canoe or boat,
as the canyons were filled with water. How do you explain that?

->> The ground is so soaked it is going to take days if not weeks
->> to dry out. But at least it has stopped raining, even though the
 ->> skies are still gray.

TR> There is a river here called `the San Diego River'. Well....actually it's
a
TR> mostly dry river bed with nothing but a narrow stream running down it.

What about underground aquafiers? Without drinkable water, a people
cannot survive. What happens when there is no more water resource
available? That is going to be a huge problem, especially in the
western part of the US.

TR> People who made it rich I business back east come out here to retire and
buy
TR> homes from builders right ON the river's flood plain! And back in the late
TR> 1970's they couldn't understand when there was a heavy rain season that
TR> year...their homes got destroyed by flooding!

Hoover Dam created Los Angeles and other megacities out west.
Without water being so easily available and attainable, there
is no way such huge population centers could have been possible,
much less sustained over a long period of time.

 TR> Big secret(looking both ways...voice dropping to a whisper) when a piece
TR> of ground was a river bed at one time....it doesn't matter if it was 30
TR> years or 30,000 years ago, and it's been dry as a bone ever since!!
TR> Someday it's gonna be a river again! When? Who knows! But it WILL be a
TR> flowing river again someday! Someday the circumstances that made it a
TR> river in the past...will once again occur and it will be flowing with
water!

Do you know what caused the Great Depression? Part of it was due
to the flood of 1927, which caused lots of destruction in Louisiana
and other places. But it was also due to bad land deals in Florida.
Real estate brokers were selling swamp land that could not possibly
support houses. Many people from the East Coast bought into it,
thinking they were buying prime real estate, and could build their
mansions in paradise. Well, we all know what happened next.

TR> Natural disasters are just that: `Natural'! Man has no control over them
TR> whatever. Building a huge city like NYC right up on the ocean when ocean
le
TR> levels have been changing since before Man even existed, and then bi
TR> bitching because the water is rising isn't very smart.

The land is sinking and the water is rising. People down the bayou
know this, and are trying to sell their homes. But they can't because
nobody wants to buy them. The last storm that passed through there
was category 1. The levees protecting the area barely survived.
What do you think is going to happen when a real storm passes that
way? It is not a question of if, but rather of when.
