Hello Allen,

AP> What part of you have to be a SYSOP to have access to those echos do you
not
 AP> understand.

The FN_SYSOP echo is a general chat echo, and is open to all.
The FIDO_SYSOP echo is a general chat echo, and is open to all.
That means both sysops and non-sysops have read/write access.
Despite what you and a small handful others might want to say.

AP> There is no "Probatoinal" sysop either you are running a system or you are
AP> not running a system. Once you have access to areafix and you have your
AP> system up and running you can simply connect to it as you will.

What part about FidoNet do you not understand?

Since you did not get it the first time, I'll restate it again.
Just for you -

You do not even know what FidoNet is, or what is its purpose -

"Very simple; it is a hobby, a non-commercial network of computer
hobbiests (`hackers', in the older, original meaning) who want to
play with, and find uses for, packet switch networking. It is not
a commercial venture in any way; FidoNet is totally supported by
its users and sysops, and in many ways is similar to ham radio,
in that other than a few `stiff' rules, each sysop runs their
system in any way they please, for any reason they want."
~Tom Jennings, founder of FidoNet, FidoHist.txt 7/14/1985

AP>You step up get yourself in the nodelist...

"FidoNet is totally supported by its users and sysops" ~Tom Jennings

You seem to have left out the users part of the equation.
Why is that? Do you not realize what FidoNet is, and what
is the purpose of FidoNet? Tom Jennings summed it all up
quite nicely in the above quote.

In other words, there is NO COMPULSION upon anybody to become
a sysop. It might be your wish for everybody in the whole wide
world to become a sysop, but that is not, nor has it ever been,
any part of the philosophy of FidoNet.

AP> I'm sorry to drive this point home to you either step up and set up a
 AP> system...

Tom Jennings says you are full of shit -

"FidoNet is totally supported by its users and sysops" ~Tom Jennings

AP> connect to the echo and have access to it or let it go.

"...each sysop runs their system in any way they please, for any
reason they want." ~Tom Jennings

In other words, if a sysop (any sysop) chooses to allow me or
anybody else to read and write messages in the FN_SYSOP echo, he
or she is free to do so. And there is not a god damned thing you
can do about it.

AP> If he wants to set up a JamNNTPD system there's a whole echo dedicated to
AP> setting up a jamNNTPD system. He can go there and read up on how to do it
AP> on another board, after all he probably needs to download the software
from
 AP> them.

Setting up a JamNNTPd server and using a newsreader is only one
method available. Some folks even use multiple methods, rather
than limiting their choices to just one.

AP> Once he has it up and running and makes that magic connection he is a
sysop
 AP> connect to FN_SYSOP.,

Oh, I can do that now without having to go through any of those
hoops and loops. So can others. After all, the FN_SYSOP echo is
a general chat echo, open to all (including, but not limited to,
sysops) for read/write access ...

AP> I'm not trying to discourage him at all... but there are milestones that
are
AP> worth acheiving. And once he gets there he will have access but not
 AP> before.

All have read/write access to general chat echoes such as the
FN_SYSOP and FIDO_SYSOP echoes. Trying to limit that access is
anti-democratic, and against the core philosophy of FidoNet.

You think what Colin Kaepernick did was patriotic? Refusing
to stand as the flag was being raised and national anthem being
played? And continuing his tirade by saying he will continue
to sit in future games? What you are doing, or trying to do,
is worse. Censorship should have no part in FidoNet. And that
includes refusing access to those who are not sysops.

This is what Frank Vest, former editor of the Fidonews, wrote
many years ago (republished in Fidonews 33) -

Tom Jennings said:
"But FidoNet's most basic element is a bulletin board. What FidoNet
is, is a set of protocols that lets the bulletin boards communicate.
FidoNet started as a bunch of bulletin boards, running my Fido
software. FidoNet was added later, to allow point - to - point email
between Fido boards."

Take all the *Cs, Policy, geography and whatever away and "FidoNet's
most basic element is a bulletin board."

I'd add that the Bulletin Board's most basic element is the User.

                     -=end quote=-

What you are seeking to do is eliminate the user. Just do away
with them. Totally ignore what FidoNet needs most in order to grow
and survive. Cut off your nose to spite your face.

AP> Believe me there are WHOLE lots more areas you probably don't even know
AP> exist that go beyond FN_SYSOP... think about that for a moment. There are
AP> R11 Sysops echos (being you are not in R11 or connecting to an R11 system
AP> you don't see those) and lots more places out there.

All the more reason to eliminate all discriminatory "rules" to
limit such access to sysops only for any echo in FidoNet. It makes
no sense to limit access if the goal is to recruit new members.
Better to show prospective members what is, rather than telling
everybody to fuck off.

AP> He will have access to FN_SYSOP and the other areas soon enough.

Everybody has read/access now, regardless of the anti-democratic
actions of a small handful of sysops, most (if not all) of whom are
from zone 1.

AP> It comes with the node number.

Nobody needs a node number to participate in a general chat echo.

AP> Now I still offer my help in getting you set up. You can elevate yourself
AP> at every time, and I actually ENCOURAGE you to do it as I do like you... I
AP> hope you are reading between the lines when I say there's a LOT of good
you
AP> can probably do if you channel your passions in the right places. Once
you
AP> get your node number and have access to Areafix you will have all the
 AP> access you need.

I have access now. Others have access now. Who could ask
for anything more?

"... each sysop runs their system in any way they please,
for any reason they want." ~Tom Jennings
