Ärende: Re: The Final Solution

Hello Ward!

This was my first comment in this thread, how could that aim to be a final say?
I even added that emoticon to make sure this would not be picked up too
literal.

I'm not really sure what your problem with factual information is here. A good
statement should be in compliance with available fact, shouldn't it? If you
perceive coming up with facts as walking an extra mile, I can't help it.
Reducing a discussion to an exchange of platitudinous statements of the
resprective writer's felt state of the world does not sound very interesting to
me.

WD> A bit like Michiel.

Something like two decades (or even a few more years) ago, when FidoNet echoes
were so crowded that I could not keep track of all the names and people writing
there, I found myself developing the habit of bundling people together into
groups of "similar" appearance, mindset, behaviour... It took me some time to
recognise and to counter this. It fosters prejudice, you presume things that
are not there and overlook others that are. Today, with only a few active
writers left in most echoes, it is less than unnecessary.

WD> I don't get it. There's a small village by the name of Lillo in

It's a hype that will probably be over again, soon.

WD> I work a lot with kids and I an abhorred {sp?} at seeing how all of
WD> these youngsters need to be entertained from sunrise till dusk.

That's something that comes with media consumption. Others needing to gain
attention (e.g., teachers, advertisements...) have to competete with this and
develop similar strategies. Positive feedback then leads to ever increasing
attention whoring of everyone and everything.

WD> we used no hook. Now 'that' was fun, not these hundreds or thousands
WD> of zombies with a smartphone.

I think what you are asking for here ("good old days") is different from what
the actual development I talked about above is. As a youth, you probably also
could watch TV, go to the movies, read a book, listen to radio, records,
whatever. If you chose to go fishing or playing football instead, fine.
But if you compare media from these days with the ones of today (especially
plain to see if you look at things made for children or teenagers), you'll find
that the "rate of strokes" increased incredibly. Everything is so much crying
for your attention today, that stuff from a few decades ago looks really,
really slow and -if you are used to recent stuff- boring. In a certain way, you
can also see this when comparing FidoNet to other more recent "social
networking" thingies (Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp...).

Regards,
Gerrit
