Ärende: Pvt nodes vs points

As described. I simply do not believe that _all_ the various methods of listing
domains will be covered by such a "selection" program. Whether it _could_ be or
not is immaterial. If you know a way to make absolutely certain that systems
with domains, listed in any way possible, are properly added to an "include"
list, be my guest - you're the programmer, not me. All I know is that all the
"include" lists I've ever seen have missing nodes because of some wierd way the
domain has been listed.

ml> this one is basically backwards...

May be, but it exists. That's the point of what I wrote above.

RB>> That's confusing here, as we don't have such node systems (or at

Do I have to start pointing out the differences in usage between Z1 and Z2
again? I'm certain you would make some mistakes with Z2 addresses if you were
in a similar position.

And my comment about agreeing on a _binding_ method of including domains in a
nodelist entry stands. In my opinion, that would be the key to preparing a
really reliable "include" list for binkd.

RB>> Marc, I don't want to insult anyone,

ml> then please spell my name correctly...

There are TWO Mar(k/c) Lewis-es writing in the Z1 echos I get from Ross (Z1C
and FIDONEWS):

Marc Lewis 1:396/45 and
mark lewis 1:3634/12

One writes his name capitalized, and you write everything lower case. It's easy
to get confused in such a situation, and I would have thought you had
recognized that long ago. A comment like "I'm the lower-case Lewis" (or in your
case "i'm the lower-case lewis"), possibly with a smiley, would have been a
better remark.

I didn't insult anyone.

Over the years, people have spelled _my_ name Busche, Basche, Bash, Bahse and
otherwise without my getting angry. Maybe you're the shining exception, but
most people make an occasional mistake.

To be frank, after putting up with Bjorn Felten and Michiel van der Vlist, I'm
getting a little sick of this nit-picking when someone unintentionally (or in
Bjorn's case, because of the impracticality of using high-ASCII characters in
fido messages) misspells a proper name.

RB>> but all that seems a great effort for very little benefit to me. It
RB>> would be enough if we could all agree on how and where in the

ml> that is not required and never has been...

OK, then we'll have to agree to disagree. I think it would be important.

ml> it is even moreso not required with the f.n.z conversion that is
ml> default...

Assuming anyone knows what domain that's supposed to go to. Now, how about you
writing an article about such addressing in the newsletter so that at least
everyone reading it (unfortunately not many by now, but better than niothing)
knows the proper domain, too?

ml> ... in fact, with so many folks using binkd and the f.n.z
ml> conversion...

Binkd yes, the f.n.z. conversion absolutely no. Maybe where you are, certainly
not here.

RB>> OK, if I contactedd loads of people on a regular basis, I could see

Except it's not complete. Same comment as above with the different methods of
listing domains.

ml>>> for the f.n.z dns domain format, the binkd guys have set up
ml>>> binkp.net since fidonet.net got lost some time back...

RB>>> Aha! This is exactly the thing I meant above.

ml>> i don't understand "exactly the thing [...] meant above"...

RB>> Look at my comment above:

ml> i did before i wrote that... and now, a few messages later, i have no
ml> idea which comment you were talking about... yes, even after going
ml> back and reading them in another editor while i write this :?

I repeated the comment after the colon above for your ease of comprehension.
But based on what you write after this, I can see there must be some basic
misconception, and I'm not sure where it is. You appear to make the same
assumptions that I've also seen in several messages by Roy Witt - namely, that
the situation everywhere is identical to that you are familiar with - and which
naturally goes in reverse, see my problems with Bob S. This is a typical
problem in communication, in our case made worse by the different customs and
structures in R24 (if not in the entire Z2) and Z1.

The comment I referrd to was, of course,

>===================================================================
RB>>> As to the f.n.z. conversion, there's been so much shut down in fido
RB>>> over the years that I have no idea if that would even work
RB>>> nowadays...
>===================================================================

RB>> You confirmed the problem with your remark. You know about this
RB>> binkp.net. I didn't until now, and how many others (outside R50) are
RB>> familiar with it?

ml> i don't know but i do make it a practise to turn on and follow the
ml> support echos for the software i use...

Mark, I don't think this is going to get us anywhere. All you're doing is
accusing me of neglect, and I see a basic problem with preparing "include"
lists for binkd.cfg that you appear not to even recognize.

At any rate, I think you'd do well to realize that not everyone in fido has
your level of technical expertise or information, and to be a little more
forgiving with those who don't program in Perl or PHP or whatever just to pass
the time. There are a lot of us around, and not all of us can be as technically
expert and up-to-the-minute informed as you appear to be.

Cheers, Bob
