RW>> English is read as it is written.

 MvdV> Oh really?

MvdV> Then how come "Ginger" does not rime with "singer",

They do. The emphasis of rhyming is the end of the word, not the
beginning. In this case, errr.

Lady of Ginger
was the singer
of Peg Of My Heart
the little tart...

She was so off key
it made no sense to me
I drank in my solice
only to find Alice

Who made my day
in a special way
She couldn't write
but she was right

Ginger made a fool
of me and O'tool
stumbled over the toad
while I traveled the road

That's off the top of my head...

Need I go on?

MvdV> but "Worcester" rimes with "booster"

Woos-tar and booster? One is an Englishman's fuck up and the other says
what it means. The Wooster name is repeated in New England too.

MvdV> and "Gloucester" rimes with "foster"?

Think so?

Go here http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Gloucester and click on
the American flag and then the British flag to hear the pronounciation.
They are identical.

Then type in foster and click on that pronounciation.

Note that the 'Fos' part of the word is pronounced the same in both
verions, but the ending of the word is pronounced slightly different in
both. An English variation in pronouncement, but not much in sound.

MvdV> How come "brake" is not spelled the same as "break",

Because one refers to the brakes on a mechanical conveyence and the other
means to break something, like an arm or a leg...

MvdV> but "teak" and "take" are not pronounced the same?

They aren't pronounced the same because they're not spelled the same.

My theory is that the 'e' modifys the previous or following vowel (a).

Sometimes.

An e after a vowel as in take, usually modifys the vowels pronouncement,
where in take, the a is pronounced as it is in the alphabet, a long 'a'
sound. In teak, the following vowel is modified to be silent or nearly so.

So you get something that sounds like tay-k and tee-k...

MvdV> How come "reading" rimes with "seeding" when it is a verb, but
MvdV> rimes with "bedding"when it is the name of a place west of London?

Same thing. But there would be real confusion if reading were spelled
reeding, which would have something to do with perhaps the changing of the
reed in a musical wind instrument.

And who knows, Reading, UK may be a spelling meaning Redding...we also
have a Reading, PA here in the states, while we also have a place spelled
Redding, in California.

MvdV> And how come "Featherstonehaw" is pronunced "fenshaw"

I'd call that feather-stone-haw if I ran into it and not ever equate it to
mean fenshaw. However, the natives of that area may have shortened the way
they refer to that place by combining sylables to mean fe-ns-haw...they
couldn't or wouldn't say it like my first impression either and thus,
altered the pronouncement of the word to their liking.
