actually, the systems are all the same... what is different is what the
manufacturers use... i found a pdf yesterday that shows no less than 4 or 5
different VIN "formats" used by mitsubishi... you have to know what year the
vehicle was made to know which format to use and you're in a catch 22 if you
try to use the year indicator in the VIN to determine that... especially when
they started recycling the indicator characters so that A covered more than one
year and you needed a numeric in another position to tell you which year that A
stood for...

i was going to comment that one can still use translate.google.com if they need
to... wikipedia's multiple language sites are not meant to be translations of
each other... they really should be but they are not...

www.vin-decoder.com is where i found those pdfs... there's a general one and a
mitsubishi specific one... the general one is the one that lists all the
various formats used by each manufacturer but it only comes up to like 2010...

they're not always the same here in the states either ;)

if they are there, they are mounted inside on the dash at the bottom edge of
the windshield on the left side of the car closest to the hood... more than one
document i read yesterday pointed out that the VIN is always mounted there...
even in foreign countries... but then, we don't know how official these
documents are, either... i've also had more than one vehicle where the VIN
mount didn't exactly align with the slot for it... i was glad that they were
also using barcodes on them because there was no way to read the numbers but
one could use a barcode reader to get the info...
