Not at all ... everyone can get their echomail where-ever they want or is
practical or technically feasable or ...
 
One can draw up as many schemes as one wants to send the netmail, but when one
of those systems goes belly-up then what? Overhere it will be sent into "the
tree" meaning most likely it will follow a structured routing as in the
nodelist.
 
When that happens, a poll to the nethost (not the NC, the 'Nethost') is
advisable to pick-up what was delivered there routed.
 
That's what I "suggest" to people, that is not an "edict" (which would be
unenforceable anyway).
 
There was a practical example here the last weeks with sysop Rudi Timmermans
who was not getting routed netmail. I "suggested" him to poll his nethost, he
explained he was getting his 'echomail' elsewhere, I stressed my point. He
tried it and got netmail from months ago waiting there.
 
In the multi-nation environment that Z2 is, this was by far the method to be
prefered but if someone wants to set-up parallel links and lose mail ... don't
complain to me.

... in Z1 ... which does not constitute the majority of Fidonet. Overhere there
is no routing table, perhaps inside R50.
 
Some tables were sometimes used here in the past as well but at the same time I
offered no-nonsense direct routing between regions, because these were all
independant countries with their own cost-structure and exhorbitant
international dialing rates.
 
Everybody had to call here at least once or twice a week because of the
ZC-status of this node to deliver a segment and to pick-up a nodelist or -diff.
Hence it made sense for example to an RC from, let's say Greece with the
highest international phone rates in Europe at the time, to bundle-up
everything in one shipment and to deliver all outbound internation netmail in a
single call while collecting all international inbound netmail at the same
time.
 
In a system where international calling at high PSTN-rates is a daily matter,
this way of shifting netmail makes sense. Even you will hopefully agree to
that.
 
With the advent of IP nothing changed. There have been a few cases of people
that suddenly started offering everything to everyone, but quite often when the
novelty wore off they lost interest and didn't maintain the service.

Local problems need to be solved locally, it's not up to me to detail how a net
somewhere at the other end of Russia has to function.
