Even in a free society (which exists nowhere really) being able to know where
your next meal comes from is a commodity not to be discarded. When the choice
comes up between having a "full stomach" and "election rethoric" I would know
where my vote goes to.

It happens in your neck of the woods as well. You earn a salary and you are
taxed on it. Then when you go buy something you are taxed again...

Welcome to the real world ... let me explain how it goes here.
 
In order to reduce the budget deficit many many years ago the government
invented "crisis taxation". Every month on top of everything else that legally
gets stolen from my retirement income, I pay (I am forced to pay) some 64 Euro.
So does my wife, so do my 2 sons ... it is our contribution to reduce the
pressure on the international credit-rating of the country. In the long run it
improves the standard of living, healthcare, it creates jobs (though lately I
am wondering), ...
 
Every month this family pays an extra crisis-/debt-reduction tax of about 3.5%
of the net income ... Since it was instituted we paid some 36.000 Euro crisis
taxes and the country is doing well ... sort of.
 
Pls read "every month". The people of Cyprus were asked to contribute only
"once".
 
Nobody likes to pay taxes but as a population we're taking care of our national
deficit. As a result the credit rating has significantly improved. Any idea
where Cyprus' credit rating is?
 
Some year or two ago it went bad for Belgium and the interest rate for
government bonds placed with banks was over 6%. So the government issued bonds
with a fixed 3% intrest rate for the population and people massively put their
savings in that. As a result Belgium did not have to go to the international
money market and "Fitch", "Moody's" and "Standard and Poor" were completely
wrong in their predictions.
 
As a country we acted, as a country we won.
 
Cyprus on the other hand is holding-out its hand begging while in fact they
have the banked resources to solve their problem.
 
As the saying goes "beggars can't be choosers".

Probably a kind of a revolution but it's comparing apples with oranges.
 
Cyprus for decades has been ripped apart by ethnic violence after Turkey
decided to invade. After British rule ended it has hardly been stable. Other
than cytrus fruits, wine, olive oil, tourism and tobacco there is not much
going on. They have a large work force outside the country, making money
outside the country, keeping that money in foreign banks ... With waning
tourism they created a tax-heaven environment for finances ... just like
Iceland ... and the system is collapsing ... just like Iceland ... where the
main business was banks holding more money of foreign origin than the GNP.
 
Cyprus is now talking to Russia, at least its president is. They're offering a
militry base on the island as collateral for a Russian loan of several milliard
Euro of which the markers are about to be called-in ... and expect the ECB to
pay that?
 
The proper word is "extortion" and it's not going to fly. The country simply is
not ready for something as complex as the EU ... they shouldn't have been
allowed in in the first place. Same as a bunch of other countries that don't
understand the principle of "contribution for the benefit of all" ... not just
yourself.
