Ärende: Fidonet Node Number zone 1
==================================
Hello Janis,

You wrote:

JK>> He sent in an application with _all_ of his information,

So including this:

    1) His name.
    2) His voice telephone number
    3) The name of his system.
    4) The city and state where his system is located.
    5) The phone number to be used when calling his system.
    6) His hours of operation, netmail and BBS.
    7) The maximum baud rate he can support.
    8) The type of mailer software and modem he is are using.

Regarding 4) that would be, Minneapolis, Minnesota, as that is what your
nodelist shows for 1:1/140. So by 2) he would have entered an area code 612
number as that is the area code for Minneapolis.

He, but wait, if he supplied Minneapolis MN as his location, why did you accept
the request at all? Accoring to this section of P4:

P4> Once you have a nodelist, you must determine which network or region
P4> covers your area. Regions are numbered 1-99; network numbers are
P4> greater than 99. Networks are more restricted in area than regions,
P4> but are preferred since they improve the flow of mail and provide more
P4> services to their members. If you cannot find a network which covers
P4> your area, then pick the region which does.

P4> Once you have located the network or region in your area, send a
P4> message containing a request for a node number to node zero of that
P4> network or region. The request must be sent by netmail, as this
P4> indicates that your system has FidoNet capability.

He should never have sent the request to you and you should never have accepted
it in the first place. According to the nodelist, Minneapolis is covered by net
282, and so NC282 is where his request should have been sent to. Who then could
have given him a number in net 282. If he met the requirements...

 JK>> I sent him a node number,

Which you should not have if the data he supplied are correct and he is indeed
located in Minneapolis. He should have gotten a number from NC282, not from
you.

I noticed something funny though:

His system reports that he is indeed 1:1/140. It also reports that it is
located in Leuven Belgium. Now how can this be? Is this a variation on the
thought experiment of Schroedinger's Cat? Is his system in a superposition of
two quantum states? Is it both in Minneapolis Minnesota and Leuven Belgium?

If so I might have collapsed the wave function by taking a look...

Please explain.

Cheers, Michiel
