You said it yourself:

"My nodelist compiler redirects "unpublished" phone numbers to the preceding
coordinator node (unless a phone number override is provided). While my mailer
itself does not do the redirection, it will redirect mail based on the
compiled nodelist redirected phone numbers."

Some mailers that are used over the internet act on Pvt, -Unpublished- and Hold
in nodelistings in the exact same manner. By causing them to redirect to the
host, you are denying them the ability to connect directly to other IP
connected systems.

All the arguments of "this or that mailer is not an IP mailer" doesn't matter.
These mailers can be used for IP connections, they work on the keywords as
defined in the FTS documentation, and the sysops have every right to use those
mailers and continue to use those mailers in the future for IP connections, so
long as they are happy to. If it works, it works; and that's all that matters.

When you start changing the definitions of keywords, then what worked before
will no longer work. It is not really "progress" if it is not backwardly
compatible. It's rather more like Microsoft's philosophy of forced "upgrades",
that cause all sorts of problems for many people, when what worked before no
longer works.

Then there is the fact that as modem usage becomes less and less in this
network, it will become harder and harder to find qualified people who are
willing to act as net coordinators, who care to run a POTS line. There is a
clear need right now for ION net hosts, and the need will only increase in the
future. Disbanding a viable net just because no one in the net has a modem and
also wants to be the Host is not a good solution. Therefore, we need to allow
ION's to list without requiring Pvt or Hold in their listings, because Pvt or
Hold prevents them from listing as the net's host.

These are real problems that this network faces today, and they are problems
that need to be resolved in order for this network to move forward. Using Pvt
and Hold for non-private ION's just exacerbates the problems, because it places
the needs of one group of nodes above the needs of another group of nodes, and
it does nothing to resolve the basic problems that I have described here.
