===============================
ml>> first, i never said anything about under or over equipped users...

SL> If you don't have an unmolested internet connection, you are
SL> underequipped. Shit, next we'll have email only Hosts.

yeah? so... what's the problem with that? its no different than an ION host and
we already have those... hummm... an ION host can already be email only... will
wonders never cease ;)

SL> Besides, a) binkp can run on any port, and b) if your ISP or
SL> employer is blocking anything, it would be a privileged port
 SL> like 80, not 24554, 60177, or 60179.

and what if one can't run a binkd server or client?

ml>> users aren't even part of the point...

SL> Yes they are. People posting on Fidonet /are/ the "audience."
SL> Entries in the nodelist are not.

we're not talking about an audience... we're talking about getting nodes to be
able to connect with other nodes and also to assist the network (aka nodelist)
in growing and possibly having some 10000+ nodes again like we used to have...

ml>> fidonet to grow is to provide a way for new members to
ml>> participate as full nodes... not as users or superusers...

 SL> Wang waving.

do that in private, please... i don't care to know about your sexual activities
in public ;)

SL> I don't know what this fetish is with having a full node
SL> number, but it's dangerous. Fidonet is not a glorified
 SL> usenet reader.

seems that you are confusing apples and oranges... i want fidonet to be able to
gain systems and grow again... if the users come back as bbs users or point
systems, that's fine but i'm more interested in getting more /node systems/
back in fidonet... bbs users and point systems would be akin to your "usenet
reader" statement...

ml>> for fidonet to grow, that means that the nodelist has to
 ml>> grow, also...

SL> Yeah, I'm sure there are thousands of people who'd just love
SL> to be active Fidonet members, if only they could get it by
SL> HTTP, carrier pigeon, or morse code.

some used to get it via QIC tape backup tapes! some may still get it this
way...

SL> If Fidonet is to grow, it should attract _posters_ and it can
SL> do that far more easily with points and user accounts that
SL> have absolutely no responsibilities whatsoever.

i guess you're going to be the first to shutdown your node and join another
system as a bbs user or point user, eh? oops, there goes your FTSC Chair
position ;)

ml>> otherwise, fidonet ends up being numerous small AOL-type
ml>> entities that can communicate with other AOL-type
 ml>> entities...

 SL> Huh?

you know what AOL is, right? one huge system with millions of users... fidonet
could fit right into what you appear to be advocating above by cutting all
nodes and there being only one huge system where everyone was a user... seems
to me that that's not fidonet at all but one huge bbs system...

fidonet is a network and as such needs to have nodes... so what about the
audience... they are secondary to the growth of the /network/... they are,
however, primary in the growth of the _traffic_ the network carries... one is
apples and the other is oranges... we're talking about apples and getting the
network connectivity all worked out so that the network can continue to have
and gain /nodes/... the users will come with the nodes in one manner or
another...
