Ärende: http compatability flag
===============================
Hi, Michiel!

01 Aug 04 15:24, Michiel van der Vlist said to Alex Shakhaylo:

 >> MV> The more protocols you add, the more room there is for bugs
 >> MV> and errors. I prefer things that do one or two things well
 >> MV> instead of trying to do everything and doing it poorly.
 >>
 >> This is just _your_ prefference, but I'm working for mine
 >> ;)

MV> You are doing more than that. You are inventing new protocols...

No, I don't. I only suit existing inet protocols for Fidonet
needs. Binkp is a completely newly invented protocol, but SMTP/
POP3/HTTP are not.

 >> I always install the lates copies of software (alphas,
 >> betas) with maximum number of new features. Bugs don't fright me,
 >> because they usually are temporary thing. This is my _preffe-
 >> rence_, and it is natural that my mailer goes this way ..

MV> If you write it for your own personal satisfaction that is fine.

Not only for satisfaction, but rather for a convinience.

 MV> But
MV> then you should not ask for a new flag avery time you come up with a
 MV> new protocol.

You think the number of flags is limited forever and FTN
should not evolve ? And this, you think, will help fidonet
to survive ?

 >> I have to be "at the edge", I'm not satisfied with just
 >> stable but featureless tools.

 >> And beside of all this is interesting -- to experiment, to
 >> look for new ways, to find solutions.

MV> And after you find solutions you will start looking for problems to
 MV> match I suppose?

No, I will not. I'll look for how to optimize my work
taking in account additional features

 >> >> My mailer is free of politic, because it is FTN
 >> >> mailer, not only Fidonet one ;)

 >> MV> Think again. "My mailer has to support as many protocols as
 >> MV> possible" is a strong political statement in itself.

 >> This is not politic, because I have not prefferences which
 >> way is better. All the ways are equally good for me.

MV> And so you promote all and hat is a political issue. The more
MV> protocols, the farther we drift away from universal connectivity. I
MV> think that is bad for Fidonet in general.

Michiel, let politics to mandate which protocol to use and
which one to forbide. Our task is to document existing prac-
tise to make people possible to use it.

MV> I think it would be better fo FidoNet to have LESS protocols.
MV> Preferably with one protocol being mandatory. Thet would be a step
 MV> towards universal connectivit.

You just want that Fidonet was freezed, but this is not
possible, because this is beyond anybodies forces.

MV> Yes and that is a political statement. But saying the opposite - as
MV> you do - is also a political statement.

Nicht. I can't regard giving an option as a politic.
BTW, coming out of your words Dima Maloff is the
greatest Fidonet politic.

MV> Choosing not to chose is also a choice.

Yep, until it is the only possible choice.

 >> Politic begins with limitations and prefferences, they make
 >> people feel uncomfortable.

 MV> Speak for yourself.

How do the protocols, that are used by others, can make you
feel uncomfortable ?

 >> FTS-1 is just another protocol, but according to politic it
 >> is mi-nimal requiered Fidonet protocol.

MV> That is not politics that is common sense.

'Common sense' is just senseless set of words. It
means nothing that can be stated.

 >> MV> If you wish to implement those alternatives in your mailer,
 >> MV> that is your choice. But then don't tell us

 >> I'm sure you did mean "don't tell _me_".

 MV> No, I meant what I said.

How can you speak for other people ? Trying to make their choice
for them ?

 >> MV> Until not so long ago I used a couple of home made programs and
 >> MV> a batch script to exchange mail between my main system and my
 >> MV> laptop point over my Novell LAN. If I were still using that
 >> MV> should we document that method and introduce the IPX flag?

 >> But of course.

MV> If you really believe that, I see no point in trying to convince you.
 MV> :-(

You can't, because aksiomatic of your logical system differs from
mine.

Bye, Sinc, Alex
