I prefer the other way around. I send direct when possible and route when
direct is not possible.

That is how I have done it. My permanent links - the one I have a secure
connection with - are in nodes.cfg, an include file for binkd.cfg.

I prefer to not use literal IP addresses and use only host names instead. DNS
failures are rare and many IP adresses are dynamic anyway. A much more frequent
event is that a node is temporary off-line.  If one enters both the host name
and the IP address, binkd will just needlessly try both if the node is
off-line.

If fido.vlist.eu fails, ninetynine times out of hundred the IP address will
fail as well. The DNS service for vlist.eu is much more reliable then my own
system. Tha added value is small.

Not really. It s a dynamic address, but it only changes when the MAC address of
my router changes.

I have experimented with transfering data over HAM radio. They were interesting
experiments. It is not suitable for Fidonet though. There are legal problems.
Plus that there is no place for the frequency in the nodelist. ;-)
