In case no one has noticed, even the Police radio jargon is filled with
codes. As is the Fire Department, Ambulance Service and many of your
county services.

PC> TV cable trucks carry some nice equipment, and radio communications
PC> in plain english seems a way to loose some compnay owned tools.

I often wondered how secure a Phone company or Cable TV service truck was.
Can't be very secure if they leave the back door open while on the job.

PC> The DOC here in Canada for GRS <CB> issued the very same handbook

 PC> Civil Defence system <EMO>.

Even when CB first started, back in 1959, the FCC (same as your DOC)
didn't issue anything but licenses and operating rules. They didn't
exclude anything but 'secret' codes. The 10 codes and Q-codes are public
knowledge, so there wasn't any restrictions imposed on their use.

PC> They didn't want 10 codes, and no Q codes, even if the Q code in
PC> CW could pass the meaning faster.

Hmmm. Maybe you DOC had slow CW operators. (it only takes a second to look
up an unfamiliar Q code)

PC> I have always stuck to Plain English, in any service. No

10-4 ... Everyone knows what I said... Now, if I used a variation like
30-12, that'd be 3 10-4s but not everyone would get it right away ... :o)

RW>> My friend above had 4 commercial repeaters on top of a mountain in

RW>> repeater association in the county.

 PC> Really Roy!

Yeup. The DR0NK Radio Network (Amateur VHF and UHF repeaters linked to
each other throughout SO CA and sometimes remotely linked into NO CA,
Nevada and Arizona). Some of these guys I sorta grew up with, they being
about 10 years younger. We all met on CB, even my friend with the
commercial repeaters.

PC> I have only heard a few times, via the repeaters here the 10 codes
 PC> and the cb jargon.

Heh. There were a lot of local HAMs in SD that used to complain about
that, but no more. There must be more ex-CBers in the HAM ranks now than
there are old-timers.

PC> Funny to hear on the cb radio a known ch 19 operator, switch from his
PC> CB character into his Amateur Identity, I feel like I am listening to
 PC> batman and robin.."live".

Heh heh heh ... There are some funny characters on CB. I have a CB set up
here and listen to the truckers on the interstate.

bk>> However, getting through to upper management was about as
bk>> difficult as it always is.

PC> Has that ever changed. They get the idea via the movies and TV
PC> that this is the way it has to be operated.

I don't think so. I was upper management for a while and my door as well
as the Prez's door was always open to anyone.

bk>> BTW, ham radio got me into work in a TV factory, which helped in
bk>> military communications, which led to the cable tv job, which
bk>> eventually led to industrial automation.

PC> I think a lot of people got into industry that way Bob.

RW>> I already had a career when I became a HAM, so amateur radio was
RW>> always a hobby for me.

PC> Me too Roy. I was doing a cable & radio talk show, when I met
PC> someone telling me about the ham radio licence, and a tech guy at the
PC> station got me going. The biggest surprise was the test. I felt
 PC> really insulted.

I was first licensed in 1970 and I was a blue-collar worker in a Tool &
Die shop. My interest in radio came when I was in high school and met a
HAM who was my same age. He let his license lapse, but we were the first
of 5 licensed CBers in town. I sent him a QSL card when I attained my
Advanced license and that was an incentive for him to get his license.
He's an Extra Class, living in Missouri now. One of these days I'll have
to turn on my HF rig and have a talk with him.
