Yah remember those days. I was sysop then of 1:290/18 first then 1:283/520
when I moved back to eastern IOwa. My bbs was the main ham radio bbs for
southeastern IOwa. I even had a packet radio door up for awhile.

Yah, I had friends got hit pretty good by Rita as well. In fact one from Lake
Charles was our sec for Louisiana, and a good friend of mine. HE sent a
message through our sm to me in SAn Antone when I was heading back through
SLidell La. where we lived to pick up our dog. Also to get our van out of the
parking garage at University hospital where it was on an upper floor and quite
safe from the flood waters.

After the house burned the humane society was making a sweep through our
neighborhood for dogs and a buddy of mine who was comms for NOrthshore regional
medical center had been checking on the dog and feeding her. HE heard the
humane society folks were sweeping the neighborhood so he went with another
local ham's truck to get the dog, took her to a local animal hospital/boarding
kennel, gave 'em a $100 bill to board her and his credit card number. I called
them then next MOnday morning (it was Sunday when he let us know where she was)
told them to give her her vaccinations which was supposed to happen the day
Katrina hit, and I'd pay them what was owed when we came through. Anyway, our
sec from Lake Charles was told by his xyl to either contribute to the get the
dog out of jail fund, or go get the dog and we could pick her up. SO we
stopped by his place and he basically contributed the rest of the money owed
for boarding the dog.

I'm also a regular ncs for the maritime mobile service net on 14.300 mhz, and
those folks sure helped us land on our feet as well. NObody can ever tell me
that the ham radio community doesn't look after their own. The ham community
was more help to us getting our stuff together than the feds were. RW> A friend
of mine has a 9 call in California after having several 6
RW> calls. He was homesick, I guess. I keep mine because it's a vanity
RW> call and it holds some sentimental value for me.

MIne's a vanity too. ITs former holder's in Texas somewhere. I'm also not
sure I"m going to remain here forever, so I"ll keep this call. THe letters
hold some significance for me as I'm somewhat active in an organization they
represent.

Btw, had real good luck with K-COmm there in San Antone ordering some gear.
WAs trying to get vhf uhf gear together again since all I had was one broken
old ht and I couldn't get the paperwork to return to my home unless I had comms
gear. Luckily one of my hf rigs was at University hospital as a backup rig for
the station there, and our emergency management head retrieved it, my braille
printer and this very computer I"m typing on right now from the radio room
there.
