Right here in this country, among other places.  Usually it's done because the
couple want to be married but for some reason - often if not usually military
service - they cannot be together.  So each goes through the marriage ceremony
with a proxy stand-in, and they try to do it at approximately the same time.

I don't think anybody said that LDS digs up the dead to baptize them.  What was
said was that your church uses a proxy to undergo the ceremony in the place of
some person who was already dead.

I didn't say LDS did it.  IIRC those who did were what we would now call
fundamentalist Christians.
