GM>>> Spam Abuse program. (It's probably a very good thing that M$ hasn't
GM>>> tried to scoop this software or we could count on it being
 GM>>> dysfunctional.)

GM> The same applies to Symantec... ;-))

very true! ;)

ml>> hehe, i hear that... there are still some areas that need work,
ml>> though... for instance, if you use the Whois and Abuse Address caches,
ml>> they are not purged automatically and i've found no way, within the
ml>> program, to do so... using these caches stores the info on your system
ml>> to speed up the lookups even more... the problem comes when IP blocks
ml>> are reassigned and domains move to other IP blocks and similar
ml>> activities... the spamcop deputies spend a lot of time updating their
ml>> cache info and making adjustments so that the spam reports do go to
ml>> the proper place but it takes input from the users... i don't know
ml>> what Abuse plans to do in this area, though...

GM> I was under the impression that SpamAbuse was Open Source and

it is...

GM> that the code is available to EVERYONE!

it is...

GM> If that is the case, can you not make modifications to the
GM> source, test the mods and if they are successful, upload
 GM> them to the group?

yes, one should be able to do so... since it is housed on sourgeforge, one
would likely need to be SF registered and also accepted as a developer on the
project for easier updating of the modified source...

GM> I really have to dive into Abuse and use it more often.
GM> Is there a "template" that will obfuscate my e-mail address
GM> and that of my ISP?

no, not that i've found or heard of...

ml>> the one thing i do like about it is that i can, over a period of time,
ml>> build a list of address blocks served certain countries and domains
ml>> and can then add them to my (featureless) SMTP mail server to block
ml>> those areas that i will never get legitamate email from... ie: china,
ml>> tiawan, korea, turkey, and others...

GM> It maintains a log file?

no, turn on the caching of that info and then look in that directory ;)

ml>> yes, i, too, will be glad when IPv6 goes into effect but i'll also
ml>> hate it as much of my stuff is based on IPv4 and likely will not have
 ml>> a path to upgrade to IPv6 :(

GM> As I continue to read "TCP/IP for Dummies", it is my understanding
GM> that IPv6 is backward compatible with IPv4; that is, IPv4 addresses
GM> will be translated to the IPv6 standard "on the fly"... Or is there
GM> some other problem that I'm not understanding correctly?

well, TTBOMK, IPv6 is large enough that each person will be able to have his
own IP number... with the translation stuff, that probably won't be apparent
until the ISPs go so far, if they do, as assigning each person their own IP
instead of charging for a "static" ip...

GM> I just now did "ipv6 install" (again) on the XPP box. I can
GM> do a "ping lilwin (the W98SE box)" and get a response, but,
 GM> when I do a "ping6 lilwin", I get a 'bad ipv6 address on
GM> lilwin'... Is that what you were referring to?

likely, yes... especially if there's no IPv6 address for lilwin ;)

[trim]

GM> Are you aware of a IPv6 clone that will work on W98SE?

no, sorry... i'm not... and the w98 boxen here are one of the main reasons why
i would have a problem doing IPv6... however, it is possible that my linux
routers may be able to assign IPv6 numbers as needed... even though the w98
boxen may not be able to use them, it may be possible that others can use them
to contact the w98 boxen... dunno and, to be honest, i've yet to even think
about playing with IPv6 stuffs...
