 I would agree that there are a lot of workstations running Windows,
 but probably many unnecessarily.  The real boon for Microsoft has
 been Office, and there are options that allow one to avoid all of the
 Microsoft licenses for the OS, while still using Office.

 Moreover, the initial response from the corporate side to Vista has
 been less than encouraging.  Dell has agreed to continue to provide
 XP on several model machines in response to complaints from corporate
 customers unhappy with Vista.

 Another potential cost saver for corporations is virtualization.  There
 is nothing in the Microsoft EULA that precludes running XP (any flavor)
 in a VM.  Servers running XP in a VM could allow for workstations
 running another OS and using XP as a terminal client.  Less licenses for
 XP required in that scenario.

 I personally believe the discussion between MS and SuSE concerning its
 Enterprise Server edition involved heading this off at the pass. ;-)
