The attrition among Fido sysops virtually destroyed the distribution
network, at least with respect to users having access to local dial
in boards. Net after net died, despite the resistance of Fidonet to
move to the net (not necessarily the web).

As you know, most of the software for running boards was DOS based, and
not capable of being easily moved to the net. Commercial development
of BBS software ceased to be lucrative, and hence ceased.

At least with internet distribution, anyone with net access could
participate. While some sysops have opted to maintain TELNET access
or even HTTP access boards, others think the move to the still
viable newsgroup format the simplest, most straightforward solution.

I should point out another obstacle that hasn't been mentioned. Most
personal ISP accounts expressly prohibit any type of web hosting in
their service agreements. They have and will block port access to
enforce the terms. Requiring sysops to have a business account
would be the coup de grace. :-(

Oh well, enjoy it while it's here. :-)

Regards,

Robert Fowler
