Ärende: you don't send me flower
================================
On or about: 03-25-08 04:08, Maurice Kinal did engage James Bradley regarding,
but not limited to: you don't send me flowers

MK> of activity. Can't we just be friends?

You don't know where my lips have been. Err... I mean... I don't know where
*your* lips have been. B-)

 > On the Linux front, I tried a couple of glossy distributions, and went
 > back to Slack on my communications machine.

MK> Yeah Slack is the best out of the lot. However in my circumstance I
MK> prefer a blend between Linux From Scratch, Cross Compiled Linux From
MK> Scratch, modified Slackish type build scripts with pkgtools
MK> onboard, and my own special configurations and development
MK> enviroment. This is especially true on the EM64T quad core

Now, *that's* the extra, "extra".

 MK> Xeon guy but I now have a P4 system I've been testing i386
MK> builds following the same scheme except pure 32-bit instead
MK> of pure 64-bit. I had to alter some versions of
MK> development tools just to make it work for both as there
MK> were some linking issues, especially with heavy-duty,
MK> industrial strength math libs. What a hassel but it is
MK> really starting to take shape. I may switch back to the
MK> purely Slack way with these modifications as I think that
MK> would be the ultimate. Still not quite there yet but close.

...And now is when I should nod?

 > I recalled too late about the issues with the LSI RAID card I had last
 > switches to run without panics.

MK> I recall that but offhand don't remember what the kernel said about
MK> that particuar card at the time. I do recall something about
MK> the particular module being "experimental" or something

I would tend toward an "oddball implementation". American Megatrends OEMed
these cards to many companies. In passing, I read somewhere "...so many
implementations, with so many peculiarities, we can not begin to address them
here." then I carried on with my day. I think a canned kernel from Slack 11
sidestepped the HP MegaRAID last time, as this time, no kernel I found on the
IDE HD avoids the panic. It remains one of the lowest priorities on my list.

MK> like that. Also I've had issues with udev and the way it
MK> handles some hardware initiallizations. mga_vid comes to
MK> mind although at the moment things are up to snuff in that
MK> particular department after an edit of one of the
MK> /etc/udev/rules/ files to suit my purpose for it.

Here, udev seems much more cordial. With previous installation attempts on the
briefcase, I suspect Slack 12 was *trying* the DMA abilities of my ancient CD
reader, and getting as frustrated as I was. This time, I swapped the CD out to
a USB drive for the installation, and everything seems to have 'stuck' better.
hal, is only his temperamental self under KDE. Now, if I can get worldclock to
run as a backdrop under fluxbox... <EG>

RE: Dell Poweredge 2400 and 4300
 > Firmware this, and BIOS update that, backplane revisions,

MK> What model? Stinkin' firmware. I am not a big fan of firmware. BIOS
MK> upgrades? I avoid those like the plague although I have
MK> run across a few machines that should have been but never

It's a no-go, until I can get the order right seemingly. Even after I found a
"Preliminary.iso" and ran the "Start Here" CD...

I did have the 2400 updated, until I used a Dell array 'utility' to screw it
up. Before the botch, the Adaptec-BIOS resident program set the volumes (or
whatever they are called) up fine, and when I went to check my work and then
reboot, "KAPLEWIE!" Now, the BIOS doesn't call up anything successfully. The
BIOS kernel fails. HD "Verification" times out. So close, and yet... I'm just
about to send Dell a 'nice' message.

MK> were. The neighbour totally screwed up a brand new Intel
MK> board doing that and to be honest I thought it was
MK> perfectly okay the way it was before. Live and learn.

My previous #1 was bought as a botched upgrade, and I swept it up for almost
nothing. As near as I can tell, the HD had a connector prone to oxidizing, and
that was its only recurring problem. Either the upgrade was close enough, or I
didn't use the bit that missed the mark. Because the word, "error" occurred
once a boot, the baby was tossed along with the bath water.

MK> I've heard some nasty rumours about certain Seagate drives.
MK> Some of the sata controllers have issues with Seagates.
MK> Haven't heard anything about Seagate SCSI drives and
 MK> controllers.

I haven't even checked the numbers on mine, and I have yet to read what the
concerns are. We'll see how well Dell can direct my misguided efforts. <G>

 > One slipped Slack in so smoothly into a RAID 5 <?> array, I
 > should have *known* it wouldn't last.

MK> Ouch! That hurts. I've been avoiding RAID for whatever reason. I
MK> can't think of a good reason for me to need RAID is mostly why.

Free drives, and many of them??? <BG> I might even pull a backplane out of a
decommissioned Dell, and make the Adaptec (Dell calls it a "PERC 2S/i" or
thereabouts.) run "wide" or "ultra" or "2" or whatever, to double the drive
count.

MK> Same with kernel virtualization but there I know why, which
MK> is I am totally out of sync wrt an acceptable gcc version
MK> for the user applications and cannot get a gcc-3.x.x
MK> working in pure 64-bit so it will have to wait. I hate to
MK> downgrade after having such great success with the stuff
MK> that REALLY matters using gcc-4.x.x. Playing with gcc-
 MK> 4.3.0 as we speak.

"Uhuh..." <Bobble-head>

 > The bus is almost empty enough to pick up 860^2' of hardwood, but
 > that's as far as I'll say about that.

MK> I am still waiting patiently to see that.

Did you want to see the starter, that was utilized as a 12V branch point and
not tightened, or the new suspension bushing and spring-spacers? <G+D under the
crankcase>

I know, I'll open the door full of wood flooring, with the Rockies in the
backdrop! <L> Now, only if the arse will deliver on his second promise...

... James
