Huh?  Are you suggesting that somewhere in between it lost it's esata
interface?

Anyhow, as you say, esata doesn't matter without the proper controller onboard.
 Speaking of which, I was just showing off my preliminary hotswapping script to
Paul and he finally saw why I've been nitpicking about this idea for so long. 
He is impressed sufficiently enough that we looked around for potential cards
that may replicate what I've done with this promise based one I managed to
sucker into working. We found two candidates, one with four sata - two already
esata - and one ide connectors that might even be better than this one I
already have working.  Cheap too but it remains to be seen if either of them
will actually work.  Should know in a couple of weeks and if either are doable
will let you know what we discover.  As of today I have one esata, one sata and
one ide hotswapping interfaces working and a script that will scan and report
drive information to all those interfaces even if there aren't drives attached.
 Also using an external power supply for the hotswapping drives so that there
are no potential surge problems powering up an external drive(s).

Very slick and much faster than usb, although I certainly don't mind
hotswapping drives via usb.  Definetly less hassel to get working than this
was.

Create the user jailed home directories in the same base directory with the
proper permissions.  Assuming it is /opt/mbse/ftp then that directory should
only need 755 and /opt/mbse/ftp/user1 770 with user1:mbse as the user/group. 
Then if user1 logs in with the password for user1 all that will be seen is
/opt/mbse/ftp/user1 and all anonymous users won't be able to even get a listing
of /opt/mbse/ftp/user1 but will still be able to read (dowanload) anything in
/opt/mbse/ftp as well as any subdirectories with at least 755 permissions.  Or
you could chroot jail them to /opt/mbse/ftp/pub.  Up to you but you'll need to
put this information in the configure file(s).
