 MK> Keep it raw!!!
JB> Easier said from your end!

MK> How is that? Pretty simple to do as long as one steers
MK> clear of compression and especially archivers that employ
MK> builtin compression, such as pkzip, arj, and the rest of
MK> the DOS-think. For instance this reply is pure text and
MK> readable using any text based app such as cat, less -
MK> 'less -r file' for the BBS ansi crowd - more, fmt, and so on. Heck
MK> even an overbloated word processor should have no issue loading this
MK> reply. Keeping it raw is ALWAYS the best plan. It takes a Fido
MK> sysop to totally screw up, usually with an outdated and
 MK> crippled implimentation of pkzip.

When I use that W32 formated USB drive to garner mencoder, I'll bet after
decompression, and un-tarring, it'll still have binary stuff in it. Regarding
fido mail traffic, weren't they using around a 9600 modem (Well, the ones that
could afford them.) when the first workable (IE: Workable for an idiat like me
to run.) compressors came about? I'll bet they were a pretty eager lot to adopt
that technology, while filling ZMH with raw ASCII. Maybe, you mean from a fido
user standpoint? Sure, I could type this online, but to add all sorts of
convenience, and save from tying up my POTS line for hours...

 MK> No?

...Not sure I understand the question.

JB> Gentoo's WAY out of favor for me.

MK> They used to write excellent howto's and shell scripts.

Amen to that! That's what had me giggling like a schoolgirl to learn they wrote
an installer. I went in to fetch their latest version, fully expecting to
install the old way. My first thought was, that I just won the lottery!

My first warning, was that abomination for fdisk. I still wanted to give them
the benefit to my doubts, as their warnings were present, if not buried in the
last sentence of the help screen. Then, "Hold on, the executables all compiled
for a PI!" After installing a base system, the next step on previous versions
was to reboot into your own kernel *then* compile everything else.

MK> Lately they seem to have fallen into the user friendly mode
MK> which ALWAYS leads to total corruption in the end. I've
MK> never used it myself but there used to be many who thought
MK> it was the greatest in it's time. Those were the days eh?

When I harken back to a CL installation, you *know* there's trouble. I'm all
for "ease of use", but I need to tweak too. I don't know why that has to be
mutually exclusive.

[Slack]
JB> To make the USB drive visible though, I have to turn
JB> off HAL. That's another "Learning opportunity" better
 JB> spent elsewhere.

 MK> Interesting. I have a working version I built for a
MK> wireless router idea with d-bus, BUT found I needed
MK> stinkin' python to put it all together. Not sure why that
MK> is so as of this writing and might explore that further.
MK> For sure usb drives don't require HAL or d-bus, and
 MK> definetly not stinkin' python.

Woops. No, I think I had to turn off a rule. <?>

/etc/udev/rules.d/90-hal.rules

# pass all events to the HAL daemon
# RUN+="socket:/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event"

Your aversion to Python, is that it is used for GUI development?
