Hello Maurice.

08 Oct 08 22:55, you wrote to me:

Dunno, I am just starting to read up on such things ...

Been thinking, if I can get the thing to boot, then I should be able to
compile those and get them to work on there without too much trouble ... (
touches wood )

Nah! like a told a mate of mind earlier to-day, it is like getting a different
flavour of coffee each day, mild decaf, yesterday, dark roast french press
to-day, extra stong esspresso, the day after, and once in awhile an extra big
cuppa genuine "Turkish coffee" or Greek if you prefer ... , same doom and
gloom every day, just the "flavour" changes every once in awhile ...

For Zip disks to work it seems that all that is required, is that ATAPI and
removable floppy drive support be included in the kernal, at least for the IDE
type I have, but the Ubuntu disk, picking it up as /dev/sda suggests that
SCSI-EMULATION might also be a requirement, which is anyways needed for some
IDE CD-ROM's/writers and DVD ROM's/Writers, have the source for 2.6.26.5 here,
did a "dummy" compile on my Ubuntu box, which took all of 15-16 minutes ... ,
which is not bad, compared to the days when I was building kernels on a 8Meg
386 ...

FTP is fine by me, no problems there ...

Just checked, and I still have the build scripts I got from you last time, but
seem to have lost the part where you describe how you work the chroot build
system ...

The Zip Drive, came with the "old" computer from work, they broke in, and
stole the till, the LCD screen, and tried to take the computer and run before
the armed response guys rocked up, but they neglected in their haste to loosen
the cables on the computer box, so they got as far as the cables allowed, when
it jerked to a sudden stop, and then hit the concrete floor rather hard.
Insurance paid out for a new computer, but did not want the old one and it was
standing in the way at work, so I "aquired" it, after some panel beating to
the box, lots of glueing of the plastic bits, I have a computer box that needs
a HDD (did not survive the fall) and I gave the memory stick to my Son, his
box needed the extra RAM (was the same as what he had in his box) so his games
could run "smoothly", well actually I want 2 HDD's for it, one to put WINXP on
and when used, it will serve as a game server for the kids, and a second one,
I can put Linux on, which it will run most of the time so I have a
experimental system all of my own, i.e. like what I had going on the dual CPU
board that a power surge killed. :-((((

While it was "bent" it seems, it had a minor short somewhere that caused it to
not want to boot, as after bending the case almost "right" it started working
normally again, and I cannot see any cracks/breakage on the board. Has a 3GHz
P4 socket LGA755 CPU on their - VVBG - , not too shabby at all, DVD writer
also works after making the casing "square" again, and glueing 2 of the
plastic bits inside. Not nice having the place (work) broken into, but I do
appreciate getting a decent computer box for free ...

Russell
