Ärende: hot tub!

Hey All!

I am currently trying an idea out to have a special user create a toolchain on
a hotswappable sata drive.  On my current main boot I added a user called
'tothings' who can mount and build a pure 64-bit x86_64 toolchain onto a
specially labelled partition on the system.  To achieve this I had to add - as
user root of course - this entry to /etc/fstab;

  LABEL=toolchain-x86_64  /opt/toolchain  ext3  rw,owner,noauto

To format a partition with a volume label (ext3);

  mke2fs -j -L toolchain-x86_64 /dev/sdb2

/dev/sdb2 is currently assigned to the hotswappable sata drive in
question but could easily be anything on future boots.  To ensure that the
permissions are correct I added these lines to the udev startup script at the
end to make sure that 'tothings' can mount it when needed;

  SPECIAL_PARTITION=`/sbin/findfs LABEL=toolchain-x86_64`
  if [ "$SPECIAL_PARTITION" != "" ]; then
    /bin/chown -v tothings $SPECIAL_PARTITION
  fi

I discovered that was easier than finding a udev rules method.  Also the above
doesn't rely on the drive being a hotswappable sata drive but could also be a
usb device, including flash media or a HD wired to a usb port. All that is
required is the partition label.  For a preformatted existing partition this
will also work;

  tune2fs -L toolchain-x86_64 /dev/sdb2

The maximum length of the volume label is 16 bytes so in the above case the
label is maxed out.

To discover a volume label without prior knowledge of the which partition;

  /sbin/findfs LABEL=toolchain-x86_64

which will output /dev/sdb2 in this example and if and when it changes it's
drive letter, which can and does happen with hotswapping, then everything will
still work as advertised since the output of findfs will catch it.

The only problem with the scheme is if the drive is inserted after bootup and
in this example rerunning the udev rc script will take care of it. Offhand I
think a udev rules thingy would be best but haven't explored that yet.  I have
successfully build a toolchain on a sata partition as user 'tothings' so I am
content that this first exploration into something like this is doable and
desirable.  The plan now is to use it to build a pure 64-bit minimalinuxed
Slackware dealie ... just for fun!
