Hey Russell!

> Well, the only faults DOS had, where it could not multi-task, was
> not multi-user, and it's extremely limited memory usage ability
> ... 640k, never was enough ...

Minor. You just scratched the surface of DOS's flaws. Harware issues aside,
DOS was never able to look after itself which made it totally useless imho.
That is my first rule of thumb. When I was forced to use it I put onboard
DJGPP to assist in correcting that HUGE flaw. Also I avoided the need for M$'s
version of that so-called OS. Calling it an OS is extremely kind methinks.

> that really appealed to me, was scalable fonts

Understood. That hsd become important to me as I got older and my eyes started
showing their age. However it wasn't really an issue given that this is doable
with the linux console framebuffer and a decent graphics card. I can read this
no problem but I may have to up the ante soon and start using the sun12x24 font
at bootup. I know that works with matroxfb.

> get the Kinal patented "heave ho" function

Amen! No computer should be without it. That and a working delete key is all
anyone really needs. <BFEG>

> If I could get something like "mc" for viewing graphics

I had that working once by having it farm out anything with graphic extensions
to fbi. Same with pdf's except to the wrapper fbgs. I currrently have that all
working with links, both the graphical and text versions, as well as farming
out movie extentions to mplayer. No GUI whatsoever although I have that working
the same in the one GUI based partition (bootable) left standing at the moment.
I have to update it with some of the keepers on my current console only
default boot development thingy and see if these fixes will tweak some of the
apps there into working properly. I have doubts but it is worth a shot just to
see.

> otherwise, flac, encoding is used ...

Right. I am planning to experiment with both flac and libsndfile in the very
near future. One step at a time. I already have a hotswappable sata drive I
plan to use for this idea. Definetly will need the space.

> A very capable library that is ... , does not do mp3 tho,
> tho there is lame for that ...

Right. However will have to keep the sample rate to 48kHz max and/or resample
the original down to a lower sample rate. Piping the output to lame will solve
that and keep the storage space as minimalized as one could expect if high
quality uncompressed originals are the goal, which I think it is.

> libsndfile can handle 8/16/24 bit PCM encoded FLAC files ... , or
> so the webpage says ... :-)

I read that too. Also libsndfile can handle 32-bit ones as well. This could be
significant in the right situation.

> Must get to play with it and ecasound sometime

For sure!!! Don't forget about hotswapping a sata drive. That also will
assist greatly in this particular endevour. The Sil3114 based one you
mentioned will work fine depite the lack of the port multiplier compatibility.

> Yeah, well, that has more outputs/inputs than I can usefully use

Same here but what the heck. You just never know for sure. Mind you I could
say the same about the Audiofile 192. Same thing with the Revolution 7.1.

> I consider it mission critical, as music listening at a quality
> level higher than most appreciate, is one of my major "hobbies"

Amen again! I couldn't agree with you more on this.

Life is good,
Maurice
