Ärende: once was lost
=====================
Hey Russell!

> Okay, been playing with MP3's on WINXP mostly, and a bit on Linux,
> and my conclusion is that LAME makes the best sounding MP3's

I used to use gogo years and years ago, but mainly for processing speed and not
because of quality. Back then the quality between lame and gogo sounded the
same to my ears. gogo, which was based on lame, was WAY faster encoding than
lame and that mattered on the WAY slower cpu's I had available to me at that
time. Also gogo required nasm which lame didn't. Other than that I didn't
think there was a difference.

> not that I am much of an MP3 fan ... :-(

Same here. I seem to prefer flac for recording purposes but only recently
since this is the first time I've really done a comparison. As for mp3/ogg
comparisons, I am leaning towards ogg.

> I am however happy to accept your experience, in this regard.

If so then I am recommending ecasond's ogg/vorbis schtuffenputten. Noticably
better to my ears even when comparing vorbistools ogg implimentation to ecasond
ogg implimentation. No matter what, ecasound is a keeper methinks.

So I've heard. Also have noticed new releases coming out on vinyl except only
in advertising and not in any of the local establishments ... yet.

> like you I have been sidetracked elsewhere ...

Understood. Now that I've decided to abandon GUI and some other such PIA
schtuff I am finding it much more liberating time-wise and am starting to play
with more rewarding things, such as ecasound and probably jack. :-)

Excellent idea! I think you'll find that more personally rewarding. I am sure
it'll work out great.

MK> The KISS installer sounds very interesting.

> That is the part I figure would grab the biggest part of your
> attention

You figured bang on! I still have to have a looksee but I did burn a CD for
Paul to check out and report back. I thought he'd be interested in the KDE4
crap but he just told me that xfce is more of interest. He still is going to
check it out. After that he wants to inherit my packages/scripts of the last
build I did with xorg and friends, including
- probably especially - audacity and it's neediness. I am going to move
all that over to the Atom so he can download it from the wireless ftp site I
got working there. I asked him about ftp (keep or not) and he seems to think
that part is a keeper. Might even be persuaded to make it internet accessable
if someone(s) convince me that is a good idea. It used to be but fell by the
wayside from lack of use. The wireless network seems to be getting most of the
attention as far as the Atom is concerned and vsftpd looks to a keeper there.

> Yeah, I suspect they are at heart very similar, and thus why I asked
> you to check for me, ...

No problem. Just checked again to be sure and from what I've read thus far I
am concluding they are identical other than the connectors ... and cost. The
Revolution was cheaper but the Audiophile has better connectors. If I were
buying today I'd buy the Audiophile 192. Mind you, the Delta 1010 jobber still
appeals to me but I seriously doubt I *REALLY* need that.

> Have asked, bloke is using Gentoo

That doesn't tell the tale. My best guess is that he needs to upgrade his
kernel and the alsa stuff. Perhaps even udev, if he is using udev at all. I
am toying with the idea of ditching udev in favour of creating only needed
dev's via mknod on my main box. No stinkin' hardware that needs firmware ought
to make that possible.

> Thanks, saved

Might come in handy later. Also, if/when you do buy the Audiophile 182, I'd
like to see your lspci output for it. My guess it'll match the Revolution's.
;-)

> my gut tells me that a M-Audio card, the Revolution or Audiophile
> 192, will change that perception.

I'd gladly stack the Revolution's and ecasound's output against anything they
have any day of the week. I am willing to bet you'll say the same with the
Audiophile.

Life is good,
Maurice
