===============================
MK>> So you're aiming at 12V DC home? :)
MK>
MK>That would be too impractical and expensive at this point in time. I am
MK>thinking more along the line of what would be practical and desirable in
MK>situations where the 'grid' is what is one makes it in places where
MK>there is no grid.

It always good to think beyond your needs at the current time.

MK> In those situations DC power from batteries is the
MK>only practical solution, Most often batteries are recharged with gas
MK>driven generators or the generators power whatever equipment is needed.

Yes I see..

MK>In the case of computers, DC would be the way to go but then the power
MK>source would need a longer life than what is supplied by things like
MK>laptops where you'd be lucky to get more than a couple hours usage
MK>between charges. I am shooting for at least 12 hours usuage. I have a
MK>small 486 that can run for days but it lacks regular output (ie monitor)
MK>at the moment. It made an excellent router/bbs/???? on the lan here. I
MK>also have a network switch that runs off pure DC. Both of these will
MK>easily run for days on a fully charged 12VDC marine battery.

That's kinda cool.. To me it seems overkill to let a 2 GHz P4 full-fledged
machine with 4 GB ram, .. run router/bbs/etc. Remember we used to do this
stuff on a XT, we should still be able to do that. :)

MK>> But it's definitely the future
MK>
MK>The past too. This has been done this way for ages now. Think about
MK>emergency power for hospitals for example.

Yeah but then you're transmitting to 220V/110V.

MK>> (A windmill park is soon opening here which will serve 200.000
MK>> households, so this is difinitely interesting!)
MK>
MK>For sure. They've been experimenting with tidal electrical generation
MK>on the Island here for a number of years. Wind power generation would
MK>be more practical on the west side of the Island where the population
MK>isn't dense enough to make that attractive or at least not economical.

You live on an Island? I do too. I live in the same island as Copenhagen
reside, however I live in the opposite direction, Copenhagen is east, I
live in west (at the coast actually).

But it's only 100 km, so it's rather small with respect to the distances
you have over there..

MK>> Maybe it was Maximus? I really gave up in porting it so it was 100%
MK>> unix style.
MK>
MK>Understood. To successfully pull that off it needed a entire rewrite.
MK>Too much difference between DOS/OS2 and any unix enviroment. Most of
MK>Maximus does for DOS/OS2 isn't needed in Linux.

Indeed, all the modem stuff, wfc screen, and so.

MK>> So you have some helper applications written in C
MK>
MK>Not at the moment. It is currently all bash scripts that feed
MK>enviroment variables to source to ensure that the desired result
MK>happens, potentially useful for cross compiling or targetting more
MK>generic applications than autodetection schemes allow for. For instance
MK>I am currently using a x86_64 xeon to target 486 class machines. Doing
MK>this means that I can successfully build an entire enviroment for a 486
MK>in less than an hour as opposed to the days that would take doing the
MK>exact same thing on a 486.

What is there to build if it is all bash script?

MK>> I wrote a small mailer in Python.
MK>
MK>I've done that in Perl. At present I don't require pythin but need perl
MK>for source like glibc. I don't want nor need anymore stinkin'
MK>scriptors!!! Besides too much broken and needed modules in python wrt
MK>x86_64 or at least for pure 64-bit x86_64.

Ah I still see there is problems using x86_64.. Kinda wierd since it's a
long time ago this architecture was introduced..

MK> I avoid python ... as well
MK>as writing anymore perl scripts as often my targets don't have that
MK>optiion, such as ttylinux, and thus bash scripts are the winner even
MK>when perl is onboard. I already ditched anything needing python even if
MK>it works, which it often doesn't.

Yes, perl and python interpreters and libraries is quite big.. I guess you
need atleast 20 MB just for them?

MK>> I think it sounds like an interesting project, most of all to prove
MK>> the power of shell script, but also to get somekind of reusable
MK>> components, which one could use when maintaining a BBS system.
MK>
MK>I agree 100%. I may revive the WeBeBashing Project one of these days.
MK>However I am currently distacted with the idea of a working ttylinux
MK>developemnt system using busybox's applications to replace the usual
MK>suspects. So far I am really close to pulling it off but I still need
MK>the regular gawk instead of busybox's awk. I seem to recall a simular
MK>problem with Debian's awk and your porting of Maximus ages ago. Funny
MK>how things come back to haunt every so often eh?

Maybe, if I did I forgot.. Must been a minor problem, else I would have
remembered it.

MK>I just finished a i386 ttylinux development thingy and am going to see
MK>if it can replicate the usb flash disk packages I posted a cuple days
MK>ago. I had a problem with packaging I think is resolved now so I thought
MK>I'd make it more difficult just to see if I can pull it off. So far so
MK>good. Still need gawk though.

Let me know how it went... :)
