MK>> What's off?
MK>
MK>Everything that isn't turned on which in the case of pure DC powered
MK>here would include the Xeon. The cpu alone requires more power than the
MK>entire Atom guy.

Yes.. I can't help thinking of how much electricity there is wasted all
over the world on peoples desktop/tower-pcs. Most people could use a
laptop to solve their tasks but then safe the environment for alot of
kilos of CO^2.

MK>> Aha.. I did also start doing Fidonet on a 386..
MK>
MK>The only BBSing I did on ye ol' 386 was to telnet to a VMS based BBS
MK>running on a VAX server that acted as a search engine to a university
MK>library database. It was straight ascii with absolutely no
MK>colourization whatsoever (ie ANSI). It worked great.

I clearly the remember the first time I saw some characters on the screen
from a remote computer, I were deeply impressed!

MK>I learned about
MK>Fido BBS's later on and by that time was using a 486. Never bothered
MK>actually running a BBS until many, many years later as I never saw a
MK>need. The first BBS I had running wasn't a Fido based one and was more
MK>along the lines of the VMS one but I did throw in vga16 colours for some
MK>strange reason. It was mainly used for myself to facillitate uploads to
MK>home base from a remote but could also do math for remotes who couldn't
MK>do math properly. Sure wish I had a Linux box back then.

What software did you use? With Linux you could solve it by a bash script
and lszrz.. :)

> So replace XT by 386 :)
MK>
MK>Too late!!! 386's are long since history. However 486's still hold
MK>interest for me, expecially when it comes to lowpower consumption on
MK>pure DC.

Indeed.. Alot of the soekris boards (all of them?) is based on 486 afaik.
And they are quite popular as a low-power replacement for large scale
machines.. Small servers and routers..

MK>> Steam? Not gas driven generators?
MK>
MK>That I wouldn't know but the one I did take notice of was steam and I'm
MK>guessing used natural gas as the fuel to create the steam that drove the
MK>mechanics of the generator. During the winter you could easily see
MK>steam rising from the vents which I think is a clue. Also never heard
MK>any noise usually associated with gas powered generators of that size.
MK>Also, also no carbon monoxide exaust.

Ah I see.. I don't really think they would take that big of an effort, since
it would only be used temporarily.

MK>> How big is the Island?
MK>
MK>Big as far as islands go. It would take a long, long time to walk
MK>around it and also it shows up even on small world globes.

Heh.. If you get bored someday, then you've something to do.

MK>Just a sec ... wikipedia claims; The island is 460 kilometres (290 mi)
MK>in length and 80 kilometres (50 mi) in width at its widest point. Also
MK>they claim; the world's 43rd largest island

Kinda big.. bigger than my island I guess.. But I guess there lives more
people on my island.. Approximately 2 million..

MK> That's simply too much for an embedded environment!
MK>
MK>That I wouldn't know either. Never cared much for embedded enviroments.
MK>My personal preference is for lean and mean. Embedded enviromants may
MK>be lean but they sure lack when it comes to being mean, or at least how
MK>I define mean. For my evil, demented purposes any enviroment worth
MK>booting *MUST* be able to look after itself or it won't last long. My
MK>heave_ho() function will make sure of that.

Lean is good when thinking of embedded systems.. But I guess the only
thing which works for these systems is assembler for the specific architecture
