MK>> you should enter the number (or select the appropriate
MK>> entry in your dialing directory), wait for the whale sound
MK>> to disappear, etc. :)
MK>
MK>That hasn't happened in over a decade now, and even then it definetly
MK>wasn't with the expensive and extra slow isa 2400 baud modem. The last
MK>one I had - had a number of them in reserve - was an external
MK>33.whatever kbaud sucker.

33.6 was the only real speed improvement. The X2 / K56flex was not working
modem-to-modem without some special quitment afair. I wasn't deeply
impressed about X2.. Simply 48 kbps ..

MK>The rest were 28.8's or something close to
MK>that. A sudden storm effectively wiped out all the local
MK>neighbourhood's internal pci 56k ones so I was able to supply them with
MK>a much better immediate fix for their cause. None of them ever came
MK>back to me simply becuase they discovered that they had been duped into
MK>buying the crappy pci ones in the first place. Live and learn eh?

We had 28.800 for a long time.. Some people like me didn't even wanna
both to switch out the 19.200 bps modem :)

MK>I don't miss any of them despite them being the best dialup modems money
MK>couldn't buy. By that time I had already made the switch to Linux and
MK>was doing tcpip networking for everything between computers, even Fido
MK>at that time. No need to worry about others reaching the so-called BBS
MK>since nobody and their dogs cared anymore. They were all too distracted
MK>by the www.

Yeah.. And pretty soon we can see any webpage using a text-based browser..

MK>> Ah... It also takes a hell of a time to build GCC :(
MK>
MK>Not on a quad core X3220 xeon. My entire MinimaLinux, which includes
MK>gcc, g++ and friends, takes around 47 minutes. Installation to a
MK>partition takes under a minute and is hard drive based. No CD's or
MK>other silliness standing in the way of progress. Adding gfortran to the
MK>mix might add about 5 minutes to this process so it isn't a problem if I
MK>decided to start using it.
MK>Do you think I should add it?

Why bother?

MK>> Not even an X-girlfriend? :)
MK>
MK>They are all X's. :-)

Hah.. The one I had, is also an X.

MK>I don't get out much these days and I doubt I'd be of much interest to
MK>them. I do know that they don't interest me all that much and when they
MK>do interest me they seem to be less interested in me for whatever
MK>reason. All things considered I don't seem to be too worried about it
MK>all although I sheepishly admit there are times that it can be a tad
MK>bothersome.

If you expect to find a girl with mutual interests.. It might be hard.. :)

How young are you btw?

MK>> Transfering binary data over just one communication channel
MK>> becomes hard without somekind of transfer protocol...
MK>
MK>ftp is the winner although I've recently been using scp more and more as
MK>time goes by. ftp is still the fastest or at least as fast as anything
MK>else that closely resembles it. Mind you wget seems to be the number
MK>one client used on the commandline here. I must admit that is an
MK>extremely handy tool. I think it is a keeper.

Read what I wrote.. On ONE communication channel :) FTP needs atleast
one channel for sending control information / commands and another
channel for doing the actual transfer.

S-Modem/Hydra gives you almost 100% efficientcy.. Zmodem is about 90%
I guess..

MK>> My EPIA is about 15-18W without the harddrive I guess...
MK>
MK>That is excellent. Last time I checked, UDMA/100 drives averaged around
MK>6W so that would be the best off-the-shelf boot/root method. Laptop
MK>drives are around 4W and the ide flash disks pull under 1W and aren't
MK>spinney or magnetic so would be the best for a mobile situatinn. For
MK>everything else, usb flash disks would be the way to go. CF disks,
MK>especially the industrial grade ones would be the utilimate considering
MK>lowpower consumption and reliablity but then bump the cost up. However
MK>over the long haul, I would think that the startup cost would be
MK>recovered.

Yes I should really get one of those W meters, to see how much it's
actually using.

But doesn't CF disks have the problem of wearing out much earlier than
traditional magnetic drives?

Bo
