Hey Russell!

> Samba is more comparable with NFS than FTP

That is what I've heard but after seeing some examples of how to connect to a
samba server with a client it reminds me more of ftp except that it really
isn't. The rc scripts are simular to what I recall nfs to be like. It's been
ages since I've done nfs so I am not a good judge of either.

Put another way, I don't want/need either/or. ftp still is best no matter
what.

Ouch! I've had some issues with their kernels. Same with e2fsprogs in the
past. How did you install it?

> You think gcc-4.4.1 would be doable on a PIII 1GHz with 512M RAM?

It now runs on a celron-m with 512M of ram (eeepc) so I'd say for sure! It was
a hassel getting it up to speed but now it has a usb hot swapping development
drive deticated to pure 32 bit processors. A p3 should even be better
especially with a matrox onboard. If you want I could build you a system that
could be installed to a hd and booted. It'll be tricky to get the first
install working but once booted it should be free and clear of stinkin'
backwards compatibilty to abandonware although even that could work if you care
about backwards compatibilty with abandonware at all. <EG>

> bluedot linux is hassling me

What killed me was getting the eeepc to behave. I am convinced glibc was where
it was out of sync and once I escaped from the main root/boot by chrooting into
the usb drive I created on the Xeon guy especially for 32 bit processors then
everything ran perfectly, including gmp. :-)

The step by step brute force method proved itself again. I made sure by
building ALL the packages, including it's own kernel, on the eeepc and
everything worked. Paul witnessed the successful gcc-4.4.1 build/packaging
thingy when he was here for coffee. The eeepc belongs to him. If that can
pull this off then anything can. Need to have an upgraded glibc-2.10.1 first.

While we're on the subject, wireless works again with linux-2.6.30.3 which was
just released today. I am now upgrading the Xeon - pure 64 bit - and plan to
upgrade the 32 bit dealie later. The eeepc has an ath5k and on the Xeon an
ath9k but also tested the zd1211rw (usb) and it works too. So after all this
is settled the Atom is next. It is using zd1211rw as we speak but with my last
successful 64 bit build. It wants the good stuff!!!

> think feeding gcc the i386 build paramater might do the trick

See the sticky post about /etc/profile.d/cstuff.sh. That is how I started
forcing this issue. It works great.

Life is good,
