 WC> I'm just going with a $100 - 120 upgrade in a used systems.
WC> Large tower, Intel chipsets thus Linux friendly.
WC> One advertized today for $79 dollars plus 24 shipping.
WC> Gig of memory, 80 Gig HD, CD-ROM RW and DVD player combo.
 WC> 3GHz Intel HT

 JB> That's about auction prices in CND$. I watched a Pentium D (Duo?) go
 JB> for $150 + 10%. P4s w/o HDs usually fetch close to $50. Mind you, I did
JB> watch two HP 1.8gHz 4-CPU-SMP (Must have been P4s in 'em.) SCSI
JB> rackmounts go for $150 + 10%. They both had a few HDs in them, but by
JB> todays standards, not a lot of real-estate to them.

I'm off of using Ebay now, not because of Paypal but due to a browser exploit
that can properly certificate a bogus site of the main domain.

I'll go CompUSA barebones build, AMD CPU, 2Gig RAM, GeForce Nvida AGP,
case, power supply and 320 or 500 Gig W.D. hard drive.
All for 200 U.S. plus a CPU fan additional.
CompUSA islocal to me.

WC> Next project, slightly off topic is a homemade HDTV antenna I'll
WC> build for the PC tuner card I'll be installing in the next box.

WC> So simple I'l describe it.
 WC> 3 dollar balanced 300 ohm - 75 ohn balun transformer.
WC> 6 wire coat hangers, 12 washers and wood screws and a 32 inch long 1x3.

JB> I read into it, that it was a converter. Maybe with all the hype about
JB> using old TVs to accept digital transmissions; I shouldn't be surprised
JB> with my speed reading through the point. But; you say your vid capture
JB> card is ready for digital reception? "Check out Mr. Fancy Pants." B-]

I've not a computer T.V. card but a set top Apex 250

 JB> Update: I just watched a few U-Tube clips about assembling home-baked
JB> di-poles. The music was better than the math to each. (More so, images
JB> to the guy learning how to use a screwdriver.) I still like the story
JB> to a character that needed a satellite phone to work in a college dorm.
JB> To keep his antenna inconspicuous, he started bending the element to
JB> approximate a fractal equation. Now, cell phones are printing fractal
JB> images into a printed circuit to replace their external antennas.

WC> Coat hangers are cut to be 14" long and bent to a V 3" wide at the open
WC> end. Attached to the 1x3 2" apart, 1/2 inch in from either side 6 3/4
 WC> inches apart vertically.
WC> The two symmetrical inside V's pointing horizontal are wired together
WC> with the balun transformer connected equidistant between the two.
WC> The top and bottom symmetrical V elements are connected by crossover
WC> from one side to the other.

JB> I was with you until "connected by crossover..." For structure? I would
JB> imagine using thinner wire for the elements could increase your signal,
JB> but that would require their own structures, introducing its own
JB> complications. Using aluminium rod would be my next notion to avoid
 JB> rust.

Not really, at these freaquencies the minute microvol currents travel
on the outside of wire.
The crossover means the uppermost and bottom elements wiring isn't direct
between the middle two elements but rather the wire connecting the
middle two go to opposite side elements top and bottom.

JB> Update: Those "crossovers" are electrical connections to six or so
JB> elements I saw in one of the vids, I take it?

4 elements each side, middle two on either side connected to each other,
top and bottom elements are connected to the middle two however
to opposite sides.
Thus the wiring crosses for the top and bottom opposing elements.

JB> Like that many shots of tequila, it's to be expected to
 JB> lose count? <chuckle>

Brother I haven't touched that stuff in 20 years!

WC> Oh well, it was a good day today, made some headway.

JB> I just typed elsewhere, "Progress beats a setback every day of the
 JB> week." Good to hear!

WC> Next week off to Home Depot and perhaps Radio Shack for the minimal
WC> needed hardware for the antenna.

JB> As an old friend used to say, "Here's to looking up your old address."
 <G>

WC> ... User Error: Please replace user and reboot to continue.

 JB> So yannnnnnnked!

I yanked that tagline too but paraphrased it a bit to my liking.

... Now using Linux Slackware 12.2
