Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't the idea creating a digital player NOT a
server?  Near as I can tell mplayer can handle it  all, perhaps even from a
samba server.  I think at least one of us is confused as to the goal.

Unless you're planning to serve I doubt any of the above is really needed.

On Paul's I put both ssh and sshd on so I can login from my main machine and
use it's keyboard and display instead.  That makes it MUCH better. My fingers
are too fat for the keyboard and my eyes to weak to properly read the small
display.  sshd definetly salvaged the idea from my perspective.

As for mc, I can't get it to open xz (aka lzma) files but Paul claims he has a
fix for it.  I have a fix for the 64 bit version but for some strange reason it
doesn't want to cooperate with the chroot 32 bit enviroment but only for xz
compressed archives.  I haven't done anything with it for a couple of weeks now
but am pretty sure I can get everything, including xorg, in well under 800M. 
This includes all the development stuff - gcc-4.4.1 and friends.  At the moment
I am distracted with the Atom and the 64M iDOC I threw on there.  Was going to
take of it's usb based development system before taking up the 32 bit challenge
again via Paul's eeepc.  My latest challenge has been a pure 64 bit C only
thingy which is currently sits at ~200M which is nice.  I am using it as
today's default boot and am really enjoying it.  I still have the last one with
g++ so all the ecasound/sox dependencies are still doable ... as well as the
ones you asked about if it turns out you really wanted them and I am the one
who is confused about all this latest stuff.  I do know that I don't want/need
any of this but I am not a good benchmark of any of today's multimedia
schtuffenputten.  It is all definetly wasted on me, thank goodness.  :-)
