Uh oh, it's the data in the first partition I'm concerned about. partition 2
is swap and partition 3 has always been for non-system files storage.

This pertains to my inquiry and concerns.

I'll want to be expanding patition 1 which I don't wish to lose
data on up *past* the endpoint of partition 2 swap well 
into where partition 3 was until I deleted 2 and 3.

Then I want to recreate the swap at the same size and partition 3
at 2 gig smaller.

Reassure me as the only time Linux has ever messed up on
me was when I was the one at fault.

So you're saying I can delete the top two, not bother with mkfs -t ext3,
expand partition 1 up to some arbitrary endpoint 1.5 Gig into partition 3
then recreate swap and smaller hda3 without a problem?

The reason I need the room is I need to install Open Office to
be compatible with other word processors as I don't currently have
a printer thus have to use the Win XP machines at the library to print.

My concern regards your comment above about wanting to keep the data on
the upper partitions as that's the data that's expendable, hda1 is not.

Anyway you've got to admit if I don't do it right I've trashed
the system and other than not having Open Office it's just now setup
exactly as I like.

I could install Open Office in hda3 and add hda3 to etc/fstab but
I'd really like Open Office on 1.

I couldn't believe OO wasn't on 12.2 slack, it was on the install for
10.2 and that was a disk shorter than the three 12.2 came on.

Koffice in KDE is buggy and doesn't offer the options Open Office does.
