Bonus!  Gotta love when that happens.  However I have noticed that some new
motherboards have stopped putting on parallel port(s) as well as serial ports. 
At least with serial they still are providing headers in most cases but not
parallel.

Agreed.  I do have a terminal based pdf 'viewer' but only gets used when there
is no other choice.

Perfect.  That definetly helps your cause.

Actually there are four packages total for email that I use, primarily because
none of my systems use nor what email at all and thus any user is forced to
deal with that issue in their home accounts.  To get this idea to work I want
and need procmail, fetchmail, mutt and nbsmtp.  I am not sure about the
availablity of nbsmtp these days but have heard there are others that could
easily fit the bill.  Also any user will have to configure their own dotfiles
to manage/configure this particular evil demented scheme.  The runtimes are
part of the system but there isn't the usual locations for email - such as
/var/spool/mail - so the user has to replicate that in their home account.  A
bit tricky to set up but once it is done it is worth it methinks.

When you're ready and willing I could write a howto for you and if you're in
need of nbsmtp and is nowhere to be found I probably could help out with that. 
I should probably check sometime.

Right.  Or even if you misconfigure something on Slack and it won't boot. I've
done things like that more than a few times and then thanked myself for taking
care of an alternative root/boot that can reconfigure and kickstart the
original stable system.
