Ärende: you take it or you leave it
===================================
Hey Russell!

> Well, you have better hardware than most I know for the task,
> not that that is a great motivational reason but ... :-)

True but that took many, many, many years as well as knowing many, many, many
year ago what I wanted to achieve despite little of it actually working many,
many, many year ago, especially the pure 64 bit stuff. To get that kickstarted
I used an el-cheapo AMD64 cpu and an nVidia chipset crap motherboard, ignored
the actual hardware and simply concentrated on the basics on the commandline to
bring them up to speed. Things like glibc, gcc, binutils, and the such.
Keeping 32 bit compatibilty turned out to be too big of a distraction and never
really went anywhere other than to kickstart things like eeepc's which
obviously need someone like me who could care less about whether or not they
actually work, which it turns out they can. Funny how that works out. Now if
the people who buy these silly things could face reality and learn to ignore
the broken crow bait it might all work out in the end but I have serious doubts
it will go anywhere. Maybe but I doubt it.

> Good enough eitherway ...

I'd argue that with the proper tools on the given so-called hd were to be
employed then this might actually be worth something but as-is it is nothing
but an el-cheapo Asus toy. My major problem with it is the display os too
small to read and if I can get uvesa working on there it might actually be
useful as a mobile media player. However the batteries are really lacking and
I don't think a full length movie would finish before the eeepc ran out of
juice. Oh well. Having said this I am still going to try and then maybe next
time the power goes out here I may plug it into the 12VDC wiring scheme and
step down the voltage for it and see how many movies it can play just for a
distraction.

We'll see. Still working on the latest (re)build of the pure 64 bit stuff and
there is still one or two packages that need some tweaking to bring it into
sync with the latest ttylinux pacman. I must admit I am liking what I see
there.

> Which pci card is that, as far as I can tell, the pci card and
> rack unit are sold as a unit, and not seperately ...

I found a place that sells just the pci card but I am not sure it comes with
the pigtail (adapter?) that acts as a substitute for the cabling to the
rackmount. If so then just the pci card saves around +500 dollars Canadian,
although I sure like the rackmount part. At the moment I can't afford any of
it and there are other needier things to take care of. For instance eating.
:-/

> Then it is "good enough"

I'd argue far better than "good enough" since everything is there to take it
further if inclined to do so.

> Does yours use the 1712 driver or the 1724 driver ... ?

As we speak it is over at Paul's and has been since after the turntable
experiment. I am positive it used the 1724 driver but can confirm that later
if you need me to. I am almost positive the 192 would be EXACTLY the same
except for the physical IO on the back plate. Without knowing for sure I am
under the impression that the 192's IO is superior to the revolution's.

> To quote another bloke I know, "with Linux, there is always hope"

For sure. I am willing to go out on a limb and add "if it really matters it
will be a done deal".

Life is good,
Maurice
