Ärende: in my beautiful baloon
==============================
> not in my mind it wasn't

MK> This is Fido. That doesn't matter. You should know better than
 MK> that.

well, if i had been thinking about them, i'd have specifically stated such ;)

> well... using some network accessed filesystem allows the
> clients to do all the work themselves

MK> If that is true then I say let them do ALL the work themselves and
MK> save a bunch of bandwidth, expense and hassel. ;-)

would not the bandwidth be pretty much the same?? ;)

> may also be hampered by copyright and licensing legalities
> and fees

 MK> No doubt.

absolutely! :)

MK> Mind you a decent sound card would be nice.

> on which end and in which of the 3 discussed scenarios? ;)

MK> None of them, I think. Personally I just wanted to know what is
MK> the 'must have' these days. Recently the one that caught my eye
MK> was M-Audio's Delta 1010 but I've never heard or seen one in
MK> action. Closest I've been to that is the Revolution 7.1 jobber
MK> that I had my turntable wired into. It worked really good. VIA's
 MK> Envy24 chipset.

in the context of the discussion and with the knowledge that in the past, there
were times and ways that mics could be turned on on remote machines and the
sound data they picked up transmitted raw to the listening machine, the thought
of streaming already processed sound data over the wire was not lost on me...
this is why i asked about where you were talking about placing such a sound
card...

> i just found a dlink quad port DFE-570TX for $165US

MK> Okay. Just found a link and they can be had BUT also found some
MK> critiques especially about compatibilty. At least one person
MK> running a linux kernel claims that they work with the kernel's
MK> tulip driver. That might be doable for the Atom given pci.

all's i know is that the kernel for smoothwall is purposely behind the curve so
as to minimize the surface area of attack opportunities and to facilitate solid
functionality with known and tested devices...

> dual port PCI nics (intel IIRC) can be found in the $30US range

MK> About 200 Canadian for the new ones, one which is a pci-x that is
MK> compatible with 32 bit pci. A bit pricey but looks to be the best
MK> option for what I have in mind.

FWIW: i know i haven't mentioned it and i figured that you might research what
i've pointed towards (smoothwall), we're talking about using what many are
simply throwning away as too old for frontline perimeter firewall appliances...
mine are all sitting in tall tower cases ;)

> not talking about new tech, here

MK> Understood. However I'd rather use new ones.

understood but can you implement a relatively zero cost perimeter firewall that
supports three internal networks with limited access between them?? :)

> i know i've seen folk talking about Sun and sparc cards

MK> I ran across a TON of those. All are Stateside and all on eBay.
 MK> :::shudder:::.

yep and for less then $4US per port, they are excellent for a minimal footprint
firewall/router appliance ;)

> hold his Atom board with sparc quad-port nic for his rack mount
> setup

MK> That is sort of what I was thinking. Probably could easily get
MK> away with a two port jobber and then disable the onboard Realtek.

not if you want/need 4 networks... one for the internet and the other three
being internals...

> Sun quad-port nics being found on ebay for $15US...

 MK> Right. Saw them.

MK> I can wait. Still haven't found the perfect monitor which is now
MK> at the top of the todo list wrt the Atom. I am in no rush.

there's no time like the present! having lost three family members in the last
year, many things of similar nature come to mind... that is, when i can get out
of my "funk" over the losses :?
