Hey Mark!

> no... you're missing the storage space situation

No I am not. I think you've got me confused with someone else. There is no
need for file sharing here. Never was, probably never will be. None of the
hotswapped drives are network drives and the only reason I hotswap at all is to
create new bootable drives for differing targets, sometimes my own, sometimes
for others.

> workstation needing access to the same file(s), why duplicate
> them on each station??

The only duplicates I call backups. At the moment, as we speak, there are only
two so-called workstations here and one is more of a server than a workstation.
That is currently the Atom which is my experimental pure 12VDC sucker at the
moment. If the power goes down it will become more of a workstation once I
work out the display issue.

> no way to easily share it with all of them??

ftp and/or ssh. That is currently how they share anything needing sharing
which is usually install/upgrade packages and build scripts I am working on. I
like to ensure that either one can replicate what the other can do should it
matter. Again that is more like backups than file sharing. I've never had
much need for file sharing.

MK> You mean like a network phone or possibly digital voice messaging?

> could evesdrop on the sounds from the remote workstation

Ah! Yeah that is different than what I was thinking about.

> what i'm trying to point out is that there's more than one way
> to share sound data over a network

Understood. Originally I was talking about a simple media player. This topic
degenerated from there. I only said it was possible to add samba - client only
- if some other machine was accessable and actually had AV media to share.
Personally I wouldn't bother but someone else thought it would be a need.
Around this neck of the woods there is no such critter unless I made it happen,
which is HIGHLY unlikey.

> replace it with your favorite DC supply and enjoy! :)

Done. Now I need a 12VDC monitor. Got one you care to share? ;-)

> one of us seems to have some sort of tunnel vision

I think both. Also I think you have me confused with someone else.

> but it also depends on how they are shipped and marked ;)

For sure. There is one courier in particular that loves to ripoff Canadians.
I won't say who other than it is a popular one for American eBay sellers. They
can keep it.

> hehehe... then you miss out on a lot of GoodStuff<tm>

Bummer but I can live with that.

> that leaves more for everyone else :)

Enjoy.

> so you're saying that you place the wireless on your
> internal network

Nope. Wireless is wireless. My internal LAN is a whole other network. Also
two static IP's on the internet that are also seperate but are reachable to
each other via a netork switch. The wireless is currently running off a usb
wirless dealie and the AP is sucking one of the neighbour's power. Totally
different network than the others.

> those machines up for attack and infiltration from those using
> the wireless??

Only one. It is loose and full of juice too and isn't afraid. The others on
wireless might be though. You'd have to ask them.

> and what about machines that are brought to you for repair?

I am not in that business but if and when that happens and there is a need to
network than the LAN is more than ready to assist.

> on your internal network and expose them to whatever infestation
> the machine may have?

I am the 'infestation' on that network. :-)

> depens on what you mean by "bad way"... "lost" as stated in my
> above comment means "gone", "kaput", "no longer existing"...

That hurts for sure.

> sounds like a perfect candidate for the purple network :)

Probably. As we speak it is listening in on a static IP. Care to supply it a
node number? At the moment that could be facillitated with either ftp or ssh.
Possibly email but I'd rather not. ftp would be best.

> and especially when i get manic about it

Yes.

 MK> Which ones?

> those specific to the software i run and support :)

Which is?

MK> The message is apparent. Their intentions no so much so. ;-)

> yah! :P

Heh, heh.

> USB is one such piece of cr4p...

Depends on what it is used for. So far for flash disks and one wireless thingy
it has been great. Everything else for the mostpart has turned out really
crappy.

Life is good,
Maurice
