I didn't like the default Xandros either, much for the same reasons. I
made an image of the drives to an external drive, then proceeded to wipe
out the UnionFS and set up Fedora 11 on it. I had previously run Fedora
10 from a 16Gb SDHC card in an external USB reader.

Well, I won't say that Fedora is small. There are options to install a
stripped-down kernel, but I have not done that. The best option I read
and used was to place /boot and / on the 4 Gb fast SSD and then swap,
/home and /usr/share on the slower 16 Gb SSD. That way, the bulk of the
package downloads that Fedora uses for updates do not fill up the /
partition. In addition, I did encrypt /home and swap as I wanted the
added security that encryption provides for a travel machine. Even with
encryption, it does not seem to slow it down that I can tell.

This came out of a reinstall where I tried to take some advice that was
supposed to speed things up, but which instead made my EeePC lock up
solid a couple of minutes after logging on. I am pretty sure it had to
do with following Powertop's suggestion to make a modification to
supposedly enable cpu scaling. Regardless, the reinstall was needed as
I was running short on space with the old installation. Now, I am at a
much safer 55% full for / instead of 85-96% full which I was at before.

Otherwise, the only real modification I needed to run Fedora was to
install eee-control, which gives me a tray item to turn on and off
wireless, Bluetooth (which I don't currently have anyway), Camera, and
Card Reader. I have found that quite useful for turning off the network
when I don't have a signal so that I don't waste power running that.
With my extended battery (1024 mAH), I can go for quite a while before I
need to find a power outlet. Oh, and I did add ",noatime" to the
/etc/fstab entries for /, /usr/share, /boot, and /home partitions and
added "vm.swappiness = 0" to /etc/sysctl.conf per the advice I found in
my searching on installing Fedora to the EeePC.

I should mention that my EeePC is an EeePC 900 with the Celeron
processor, not one of the ones with the Atom processor.

Fedora 12 is due out shortly. One of the improvements is optimization
for the Atom processor. That means that the newer netboks should see
improved performance.

Regards,

Stephen
